2.20 Trip Design - Final Touches

  Contents First Previous Next

Check Every Route Point Carefully

  • Double-click the route to display the Route Properties dialogue box - Pic 1.
  • Tick ‘More Info’ and ‘Center Map’ at the bottom.

For every Route Point in the Trip:

  • Click the Route Point name in the table. The map will zoom in to show the selected route point at the centre of the map. If the point is out of position, move it.

Back to the Top, Edit Each Route Point in turn

  • Double-click the route point name. A box headed ‘Edit Via Point’ appears (even for a Shaping Point) Pic 2
  • Edit the name to show the mileage (green outline). The mileage is shown in the ‘Total Distance’ Column.
  • Consider a 2 digit date or sequence number as well - eg 14 178 Girvan.
  • If you have a number of Trips over a few days, then edit the start point of the route and add the date and time to the Departure. The Zumo will use this information to display your Trips in date order.

Change the Name of the Route

Pic 1 - Outlined in red. Keep the route name short(ish). If the route is imported again after a modification the XT adds a sequence number to the name, so if the name is too long, the XT display will not be able to show it. Unlike my example, I find it better to have the destination first - in case the right hand side of the text gets lost onthe display.

Finally

  • Check that the version of the map that you are using in Basecamp is the correct one. If you changed map, recalculate the route.
  • Check that you have the correct profile loaded. eg - Change the route to use the motorcycle profile.
The Zumo XT recognises only the Basecamp 'Driving', 'Motorcycle' & 'Direct' profiles. These equate to the Zumo vehicles 'Car', 'Motorcycle' and 'Off Road'. If you use anything else, the XT will default to using Motorcycle.

  • Check the routing preferences. I always use Faster Time, and have no avoidances set.
The Zumo will only recognise 'Shorter Distance' and 'Faster Time' from Basecamp. If you use anything other than these two, the route will default to using ‘Faster Time’.

Other Suggestions

  • Use Motorcycle, Faster Time and No Avoidances in Basecamp as well as on the XT. This results in much more predictable behaviour and means that you can use fewer Shaping Points.
  • No other other settings are sent from Basecamp to the Zumo - so there is very little point in setting them. If the Zumo receives a setting for a vehicle or for a routing preference that it doesn’t like, it resorts to using Motorcycle or Faster Time respectively.
  • You have much better control if you plot Shaping Points with these routing preferences in mind, and it is possible in many cases to use only a minimum of Shaping Points unless your route is very intricate.
  • At present, I recommend to always allow U-turns. The reason for this is that they alert you to the fact that you have missed something, rather than following the magenta line in the wrong direction; also they allow the navigation to request the bike to be turned round. If that is not allowed at the start, then ‘Closest Entry Point’ can result in some very weird results.

A Basecamp Tip.

If you change the routing preferences and avoidances in a Basecamp Profile, it applies any changes that you make to every route in your current Basecamp database that uses the same profile. That can take a few minutes.

Instead, set up a route using the Custom Profile. Set the preferences to be the same as your motorcycle profile - eg Faster Time and No Avoidances. The advantage of this is that you can mess around with the profile to see what happens to the route - changes are made instantly, without affecting any other route in the same database. For a Custom Profile, the preferences and avoidances apply just to this route. Even if you have other routes with a custom profile.

The idea is to minimise the number of Shaping Points by only adding the ones that are needed to keep the route in place.

When you are happy, change the routes profile back to motorcycle and faster time before transferring it to the Zumo.

Recalculate Your Route before you transfer it to the XT. The option is at the bottom of the dialog box in Pic 1.
