25 Transfer Trips - A 'Gotcha'

Trips disappearing after transfer to Internal Storage.
There seem to be four states that a route can be in after it has been prepared by Basecamp.
Transferred | ie sent from Basecamp to a holding file on the Zumo XT (temp.gpx). |
Imported | loaded into the XT’s ‘Imported Trips’ area from the 'holding place' for transferred routes in Internal Storage. |
Active | Once a Trip has been selected in Trip Planner and Go has been selected, the route is Active |
Lost | Is what will happen to your route if you stop reading now ! |
I have mentioned this in a few places, but it’s time to explain what appears to be happening - because if you don’t know about it, it will definitely catch you out. This only affects routes that are transferred to Internal Storage - but there are enough issues with data on SD cards to make me want to stick with using Internal Storage. The solution is easy enough to implement. If you don’t want to read the explanation, the solution is printed at the bottom of the page in bold Purple.
The issue on the XT seems to be to do with the file: Internal Storage / GPX / temp.gpx
This file is deleted and a new one is created whenever additional routes are sent to the XT after reconnecting the USB cable. This is different behaviour from earlier Zumos.
The Trips that have been imported already are perfectly safe. Well, sort of. But
when a Trip has been loaded and run, it is possible to edit it using the
on-screen editor. This isn’t easy for me to manage with my clumsy large
fingers, and I will make a mess of it. So I have to start again.
I can’t start again - in some situations the imported route has been changed already, and the options to discard or save is not always provided.
So when out on a long Trip, it would be very useful if you could delete the trip that has been imported tot he XT, and re-import a Trip that you transferred.
You used to be able to do that, but on the XT this may not be possible - because of something that you did without realising that there was a problem.
What you did was:
- Transferred some Trips to Internal Storage
- Unplugged the USB cable and imported the Trips.
- Realised that you had more Trips to transfer, so you reconnected the USB cable and transferred the missing Trips.
- You imported the 2nd set of Trips.
When you performed the last task, you may notice that the first set of Trips are not present in the list of Trips to import. The first batch of transferred Trips have Gone. Passed on, No more, Bereft of …. well, you get the idea.
An example.
You create 4 routes L1, L2, L3, L4 and transfer them to the Zumo.
You disconnect the USB cable and check the routes have transferred
correctly.
You import and view routes L1 and L3. All is Ok.
So you go back to Basecamp, check out your remaining 4 routes S1, S2,
S3, S4.
Reconnect the USB cable and transfer these to the Zumo.
Disconnect, start up the Zumo and this time you choose ‘Select All’ and
import all of the routes.
So that’s it. All ready for your Trip and off you go, happy that your XT
has everything that you need. All 8 routes.
No. There are only 6 routes in the Zumo. L1, L3, S1, S2, S3 and S4.
So you go to import them again. They aren’t there. L2 and L4 are not
available to import.
Actually L1 and L3 aren’t there to import either.
But you imported them before and L1 and L3 are in Saved Trips so you can
navigate them.
So what has happened ?
S1,S2,S3, S4 are all intact. In fact you can use Trip planner to
delete them and then re-import them. No problem.
L1 and L3 you can navigate, but the original transferred files are not
there to re-import.
L1, L2, L3 and L4 are lost from the file of transferred data.
S1, S2, S3, S4 are still safe in the file of transferred data. (Until
you connect a USB cable and transfer more).
The answer is simple. Transfer all of your data in one USB
‘session’ - without disconnecting it between transfers.
If you need to modify anything after a disconnection, then
transfer everything again.
Or
Transfer everything to SD card
Or
Create a gpx file and transfer that to Internal Storage / GPX
