29 Remove Data from your XT

Spoiler Alert - you could ruin your XT
Deleting files from the Zumo can be dangerous. Certain files are needed in order for the Zumo to run properly. If they are not there, you have an expensive paperweight.
I have carried out the following deletions frequently in order to start from a clean machine without having to return it to factory status. It is quite straight forward, but it only take a slip of the mouse to delete the wrong thing. It is always advisable to make a backup of the contents of any folder from which you intend to delete files.
It is done at your own risk. I have no insider knowledge. This is all stuff that I have discovered from messing around. It works for me. Please be careful.
If you are connected to an Explore Account
Some actions will affect the data on explore.garmin.com:
Deleting Favourites / Saved Places will delete Explore’s Waypoints
Deleting Tracks will delete Explore’s tracks
If you do not want to delete stuff from the Explore website, then disconnect your Zumo XT from Explore:
View Map -> Speed Button -> Speedo Circle hold for 10 secs -> Developer Test & Tools -> Reset Explore Database
This need be only temporary, and it can be reinstated by following the prompts at Where To -> Explore
The XT will have remembered all of the settings - and the tracks and Waypoints should reappear.
How to delete:
Favourites: |
Where To? -> Favourites -> 3 Bar Menu ->
Delete |
History: |
Where To -> -> History -> 3 Bar Menu -> Clear |
Tracks: |
Main Screen -> Track -> 2 Pin Menu -> Spanner -> Delete ->
Select All -> Delete |
Imported Routes: |
Apps -> Trip Planner ->
Saved Trips -> Spanner -> Delete Trips ->
Select All -> Delete |
Saved Trips: |
Apps -> Trip Planner -> Saved Trips -> Spanner -> Delete
Trips -> Select All -> Delete |
Now connect Your Zumo XT to the USB Port. Load a File Explorer program into your computer and use this to find the following locations:
Zumo XT / Internal Storage / GPX
Delete the File temp.gpx |
Gets rid of all of the files that were transferred from Basecamp last time. |
Delete the file Current.gpx |
Removes Trips and Favourites that have been imported |
Delete Shared …… .gpx |
The names will make it obvious where these have come from |
If you wish to keep your track logs
Copy all of the gpx files in the Archive folder. And paste
elsewhere. They are an excellent historic record.
Copy the file CurrentTrackLog.gpx and paste it wherever you want to
keep it.
(CurrentTrackLog.gpx contains the most recent tracks that have not yet been added to the Archive folder).
Zumo XT / Memory Card / Garmin / GPX
Delete the files that you don’t want to keep. These are routes, tracks
and Waypoints that you have put onto the SD Card or which Basecamp has
transferred. Basecamp Transfers will be Route0.gpg, Track0.gpx,
Waypoints0.gpx - where ‘0’ represents any group of digits.
Restart the Zumo and check that there is no History. Also check that Favourites, Trips and Tracks are all empty. Chaeck that there are no Tracks, Favourites and Trips available to Import.
Do not try to transfer more data from Basecamp until the Zumo XT has been unplugged and restarted normally.
After getting rid of files from the Zumo, it is not a bad idea to hold in the power button until it asks if you want to turn it off. Yes you do. Then power it up again. It will have gone through this cycle once when you disconnected the USB lead, but on a few occasions I have found a second cycle necessary to re-create empty versions of files that have been deleted (or at least, that is what I assume is happening).
