36 Skip - Edit Route & AutoSkip

Method 2 - Edit Route

The ‘Edit Route’ option is available by pressing the 3 button menu in the bottom right of the screen, it offers ‘Skip Next Destination’ (it means ‘Skip Next Via Point’) and ‘Skip Next Shaping Point’ - and usefully, it gives the name of both points to help you choose.

Unfortunately, it does not tell you which point comes first and the display doesn’t help - it always puts the Via Point first. So again it is useful to have your own names displayed. I named the points ‘111 Hunters Quay’ and 181 X Girvan - which makes it obvious from the mileage which comes first. But I didn’t create 111 Hunters Quay as a Waypoint and the Zumo has renamed it. It still called Hunters Quay, but doesn’t have the mileage which would inform me of the order.

Nevertheless, the skip function is incredibly useful - in situations where you have by-passed a route point, yet the Zumo is always nagging you to go back to visit it.

This situation may seem familiar. You know that you are heading in the correct direction, yet the SatNav is still trying to get you to go back. Pull over somewhere safe, stop the engine. Press Skip. Let it recalculate, repeat until the SatNav starts to navigate you ahead. Or make use of the XT’s ‘Closest Entry Point’ feature. Stop the route, restart it and select that option as the next destination. If you get odd results, check that U-Turns are allowed.

Using the same example, if you chose to skip Girvan, rather than Hunter’s Quay , then Girvan would be removed from the list. Every remaining section of the route is recalculated, visiting all of the route points in order. This would be handy if Girvan was a possible detour and you no longer wish to make that stop.

But always, with this facility you need to know the answer to the question: Which comes next, the Via Point or the Shaping Point ?, and the XT isn’t giving any clues. Saving Waypoints and giving them names which include the mileage is my solution. You may have a better one, or a better memory for place names than me. Whatever works.

If you are not sure - use method 1. It reveals the name of the very next route point in the list. You can then Cancel.

I’m just pointing out some issues that you may not discover until you are out on the road, cold, tired, gloves leaking, visor misted up, rain horizontal, water trickling down the back of your neck …… You get the idea. The last thing you want is to have the XT doing something that will add to your misery.

Method 3 - The AutoSkip

This assumes that Automatic Recalculation is turned on. If it is turned off, then the route remains intact and the rider is given no more prompts by the SatNav until the route shown by the magenta line is rejoined.

Auto Skip a Shaping Point.

Eg: You see that a Shaping Point is in a town, but there is a new by-pass which you take. Ignore the Zumo and instead head for the magenta line after the missed Shaping Point. If auto recalculate is allowed the XT will nag you to go back - but when you rejoin route after the missed Shaping Point, the XT continues navigation ahead.

This can be really useful when planning a route. Use a Shaping Point to mark a possible stopping place - eg in a Town - and it then becomes easy to ignore - as navigation will continue when you rejoin the original route. If you place a Via Point on the intended route after the stopping place, you then have a choice - follow the instructions to the Shaping Point and have a break, or ignore the instructions, that having taken you around the town, it isn’t going to spit you out on a different road - it has to go through your Via Point.

The Via Point also provides the facility to restart the route as it will be listed when asked ‘Select Next Destination’.

The Shaping Point at 179 Girvan (Sh Pt) and the Via Pt at 181 X Girvan are there for that reason.

In this situation - ie ignoring a route point - only the current section is recalculated (if allowed), not the whole route.

Auto Skip Via Points.

If you do not want to visit a Via Point, then just like the Shaping Point, you can ignore it. The XT will continue to navigate you towards it, but the second time that you ignore its instruction, it will display a familiar message on the screen: ->

If you say Yes - the Via Point is skipped. If you ignore it, or can't press 'Yes' before it disappears off the screen, it will try another 2 attempts to redirect you. Ignore those and the same thing happens again.

If you choose 'No', you do not get another shot at this - it will continue to nag you forever, and the only way to stop this is to manually skip the point, as described in method 1) or 2).

Instructions to perform a U-Turn do not seem to count towards the tally of 2 before the message box appears again.

If you tap "Don't show me this again", you can turn it on again Settings -> Map & Vehicle -> Skip Next Stop Confirmation.
