46 Trips and Routes - Information

Created by Basecamp for Zumo XT

Garmin do not appear to be very consistent in their use of the terms 'Trip' and 'Route', at times appearing to use the terms interchangeably. However, 'Track' and 'Trip' are very clearly defined in the Garmin help pages for Basecamp. These are my interpretations which mirror the Basecamp definitions.

A Trip is a means of describing a journey on a map. A sequence of individual route points that have to be visited in strict order. A Route is the way in which either Basecamp or the Zumo decide to get from one point to the next. A route is the magenta line and the roads which are taken. On occasions, the XT may need to recalculate a section of the route - if you wander off course, for example.

When navigating a Route, the Zumo recognises different types of routing point. Start, End, Waypoint, Via Point and Shaping Point. Careful use of these will generate the route that you want your SatNav to take.

Navigating a Route

The Zumo displays a magenta route line. It shows the routing points that it must pass through - Via Points are shown as orange flags, Shaping Points are blue discs, and it displays a white arrow on the magenta route when there is a turn or junction to announce.
Via Points show up in the choices when starting a Trip - "Select Next Destination", and can also be included on the data display as time or distance countdowns.
The Zumo will calculate a new route to the next routing point if you stray from the existing line.
Shaping Points can be ignored; Via Points insist that you visit them - but there is a Skip button to allow you to remove a route point from its list.
