75 - Create a Route on the XT Screen

  Contents First Previous Next

Without using Basecamp

This process is made much easier if you have already used the XT map to identify and store your main route points as Favourites. If you don’t do this, then you risk the XT Gotcha of backing out of creating your route before everything has been saved.

Then create a new Trip and add your favourites to it. Main Screen -> Apps -> Trip Planner -> New Trip

Add the Via Points

Start with the start and end points, and then use the (+) Add Location item to insert any intermediate Via Points in the same way.

Tap Next after entering the start and the end points. Let it calculate the route and then save it. This is because it is far too easy to press the back button before you have saved. Then edit the route:

Main Screen -> Apps -> Trip Planner -> Saved Trip

Select your route and tap the Start Point. Pic 5 is the result of tapping on the start at Ravenglass. Tap (+) to add a new point between Ravenglass and Skipton. The spanner button next to it allows you to edit / change Ravenglass. Again, adding a Via Point is easier if you have already saved your points as favourites, but many other options for adding points to the route exist. Play around with them to find which works best for you. You can keep adding Via Points.

Add Shaping Points

Press the Spanner Icon in the top left corner of Pic 5 - (it is to the left of the motorcycle) - and one of the options in the menu is ‘Shape Route’.

The screen in Pic 7 allows you to scroll around the map and drop a Shaping Point in position. You need to zoom in and the placed point jumps to the nearest road. The route recalculates. The screen shows the effect that the change has on the route.

A number of points can be added before saving the route. The red bins allow easy removal of points.

Re-order the Trip

The above method places Shaping Points sensibly between existing points, but still it may be necessary to re-order the routing points. Pic 5 shows the display after tapping on the start point - Ravenglass. Note the button with the up and down arrows. This button will appear when you tap any Via Point in the route, but oddly, not Shaping Points. Tapping it gives access to a screen which shows all of the route points - start, end, vias and Shaping Points in their current order within the route. Each route point is in a separate, moveable rectangle.

Pic 8 shows the Shaping Point A684 being moved to a different position in the order.

Save the Trip when you are happy.
