In this instance you can't rely on Basecamp to do the routing for you. You should make your own determination about what roads you think would best circumvent the town and then place shaping points on those roads forcing Basecamp to route around the town on those roads. Thank you Peobody ...

With an active route, I usually just touch the screen then the directional arrow then the minus button to zoom out.

Mine is a 2-story house with my office downstairs. I've never gotten any satellite reception. When I need to I just switch to simulator.

No Zumo 390/395/396 here, I use a 595 and an XT1, but with Base Camp planning and Garmin's maps, I often get turn instructions that include "turn -- at the traffic light". The unit knows they are present, why they can't be displayed is a mystery to me.
