There is a way to do what you guys need, custom POI files and Garmin POI loader. The following two links should get you started. I'm not seeing any change after the update, everything (so far) is working as it should. iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2017), Catalina 10.15.3.
I've always used the selection tool (arrow) to modify routes as the OP describes.

Open the route properties window of the route you want to re-join or extend. Activate the route tool (control r). Go to work.

To join two or more routes, open the route properties box of the first one and drag additions into the box in the order you want to add them.
