If anti-theft isn't your main concern, you could attach some form of a tether to the unit.
I've read of others with the same concern.
You could do a search for 'tether' in the search box and it would bring you back about 30 posts to look at and read their comments with pictures.

First thing that comes to my mind is where are you riding. Any gps needs a clear open view of the sky to be able to 'see'/satellite signals. You did know that the XT will receive some camera location data already without paying extra, so long as you have it paired to a smartphone(with mobile data active) running the Garmin Drive app.
I've had notifications for intersection cameras, and I've not signed up for any extra pay services.

As with most electronic and internal batteries, it may take a couple of charge/use cycles before the battery reaches it's full potential.

Sounds like your voltage regulator may be not working properly and causing the voltage to rise above the nominal 14.4vdc upper charge voltage level.
