Drag the RGN file to the Updater program and see this image on your screen.
Click to see the full size image.
Select USB device, not Serial Port.
Move the mouse pointer over the OK button and leave it there - OR tap the tab key until the OK button gets the focus.
You MUST be ready to click the OK button or tap ENTER with the focus set on the OK button.
Make sure that your Zumo is fully powered off.
Then without moving the mouse:
I find it easier to have the USB cable attached to the Zumo, but NOT into the computer.
Make sure Basecamp is not running.
Plug the USB cable into the ZUMO
Now the crucial bit.
You have only two hands, and you have to do 3 things in succession.
Press the lower (and hold) right corner of the Zumo screen.
Insert the USB cable into the computer
Check that you are ready to hit the OK button when the computer 'ding dongs'.
At that moment the Updater program dialog box will flash up the name of the Zumo.
When it shows up (ie immediately after ding dong, and before the Zumo name disappears again) you have to hit the OK button on the screen - while still pressing on the lower right of the screen.
You have less time than it takes to find the pointer on the screen, move the mouse to the OK button and click it - or make sure that the OK button has the focus so that you can tap ENTER instead of using the mouse.
So you have to decide what hand is going to do what.
I have the USB cable already plugged into the Zumo. The mouse pointer is already positioned over the OK button.
I hold the Zumo with my left hand, plug the USB into the PC with my right and immediately get my finger on the mouse button to press OK.
The Computer will report the wrong version of the software. It reports the software version that it is replacing rather than the new one.
The computer seems to indicate that it has finished early on. It hasn't. It hasn't finished until it says "Update Complete / Update Successful"
I think you can let go of the bottom left corner when the 'System' message appears on the Zumo screen.
Don't worry about 4.50 or 4.60
Once you have 4.50 on, you can use Garmin Express to find the 4.60 software. You will also need to update the keyboard files. Its OK, it recognises your device as a 595 now, even though it has the same serial number as your 590.
When finished, restart the Zumo. The boot up screen reports 'Zumo', not Zumo 595.
Note that you can return your 595 to a 590 using the same technique - but you cannot change an original 595 to a 590. Well, you can try and the operation appears to work, but the interface doesn't function as it should. I've forgotten what it did.
I took a copy of my original gcd file before trying this. When I reinstated it, it stopped calling it a Zumo 595, and it is now still Zumo. I don't know how to fix this - it must be something in the update process.

Have owned Zumo 550, 660 == Now have Zumo XT2, XT, 595, 590, Headache
Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

Thanks for the reply, tried it again, and it worked first time, though I had my finger on the lower right-hand corner.
"All I have to do now" is try and work out how / what to change on the GarminDevice.xml document, as they might as well be speaking Dutch on the linked forum on how to update the 590

Yes, I know that. That is what I thought I had written. Goodness, that is stupid. How can I think 'right' and write 'left'. It's not the first time that I've spotted that I have made that error.
Thanks for spotting it. I've corrected it and I'll go and have a lie down now.

Re: can 595 firmware be loaded on a 590 ?
Hi all,
Is it still possible to update a 590 to 595 software? I have one of each unit (I take one as a spare when I travel) and would prefer them to both look and feel the same. I've tried various links in this thread but none of them seem to work.
Thanks

Yes, nothing has changed over the last year. Installing 590 software onto 595 hardware does not work.

Re: can 595 firmware be loaded on a 590 ?
The question has to be 'Why do you want to do it?'
I'm not suggesting that you shouldn't. Not at all. The 595 introduces some new features, but it also introduced some glitches
Like changing names of route points
Like moving route points onto a different road when changing a via to a shaping.
Spotify, which came with the 595, no longer works.
The Available 595 version is (I believe) a USA version which will not turn the display into portrait mode.
But it has a lot of nice additional features too. I ended up running my 590 as a 595 most of the time. It is now back as a 590, 'cos I found a cheap newish proper 595.

Re: can 595 firmware be loaded on a 590 ?
I currently have a 595 and a 590. I use the 595 as my main unit and the 590 as a back up when ever I travel for more than a few days. I have the same routes loaded on both. My initial thought was to make both units run the 595 software so they both look and act the same should I ever need to swap them over.
I raised the question after looking through this thread for "how to" as none of the links required seem to work anymore. For example:-

see also for a virus assesment:

two (false) postives, but that's probably due to the nature of the program..
I used it, no problems at all. (no guarantees though haha)

Re: can 595 firmware be loaded on a 590 ?
My collection of utilities and firmware for the 590 to 595 conversion will be in here in my Dropbox for next week or so:
590 to 595.zip
There are a couple different versions of the 595 firmware and also the last version of the 590 firmware if you want to reverse the change. Instructions and everything else you will need should be in there, but you'll need to sort it out. It's been several years since I used any of it and my 590 battery has a broken connection, so I cannot test it.

Re: can 595 firmware be loaded on a 590 ?
Here are the first 3 pages of a document that I created - which uses the original text from that posted on the javawa site, but adds a little more detail regarding the practicalities to get it right. The links provided in this pdf document will no longer work - but I keep them in because Wayback machines can probably be used to find historic copies of the websites.
However, you don't actually need to download the GCD files. In the system directory of the 595 there may be a file called GUPDATE.gcd. That will be the GCD file that you need. That file is in the .System folder, so you need to have that visible for your 595 in Mass Storage Mode.
However, you do need RGN_Tool.exe and the Update.exe programs.
These are still available using a google search for those specific file names. The download links at gpsrchive dot com are still valid.
Do the search - I'm not going to post the links on here. So this will be a useful record when the above facility is removed.
