In my collection of Garmin sat navs I have a 396 and it has the faster roads problem. It's almost a 595 / XT mix with a smaller screen, which thankfully is brighter than the 595's.

The 590 and older are I'll guess from the pre-watch era of Garmin, and so it was one of their major income streams, and so they at least made an effort to fix bugs with their units.
