396 SD Card

Post by Dogs4fun »

Hey all
Quick question.
Any 396 users have an issue getting their units SD Card recognized?
I have tried 2 new cards a 32 and a 64 gb, have chatted with customer service to no avail.
It is not recognized in Windows or Garmin express

Thanks in advance

Try this:

Create these folders on the card, and see if it gets recognised then.

Garmin ( the 3 subfolders below need to be in the Garmin folder)
---GPX
---userdata
...SQL
Music
JPEG
userdata

My mate had exactly the same problem, and it worked.

As far as microsd cards, I believe Garmin will only read a FAT32 type. I believe ( someone correct me if I'm wrong ), most 64gb cards are exFAT which the Garmin can't read. I also believe that you can convert a 64gb from exFAT to FAT32 by formatting it to the desired type.

Glad the knowledge was of use, but don't thank me.

This is not my discovery, I only knew it from a post in the original Zumo forum. (Gone, but not forgotten.)

Hope you have better luck with the 396 than I did.

Best regards

I can't get my Zumo 396 to recognize there is a Micro SD card in there, either 32 or 64 GB, when both are supposed to be supported according to Garmin.
I'm on my 2nd , because the 1st one also didn't recognize it. I gave up on the idea and just put some of my MP3's in a \MP3 folder and left about 9GB free of internal storage. I did try manually creating the folders on my Windows PC.

All my car GPS's (all Garmins) don't have a problem with SD cards (in fact, my Nuvi 50 LM requires one to have maps now).

Not sure what you mean by "can't get your Zumo to recognise the SD card", it won't tell you in any way, just read maps etc from it as though it's part of its memory.

On all the car GPS, once you have plugged the GPS into the PC using USB cable, you can open a File Explorer window, and see both the internal storage as well as the SD card as another drive. The Zumo396 is not doing that - it is not recognizing that an SD card is plugged in and it does not show it as a drive.
