Test route Results from PC - 6 point route: Start-Shape-Via-Shape-Shape-End

In all cases I selected the option for (Route, Track, POI)

V1.1 gpx file sent by email. Only route points sent in GPX, no route point extensions (ghost points). Via-Shape-Via-Shape-Shape-Via
<rte>
<name>Test Route - Email v1-1</name>

</rte>

V1.1 saved as a downloaded gpx file produced identical results.

-----------------------------------

v1.2 gpx file saved as gpx v1.1 with only 3 route points - the 1st, 3rd, and 6th, these being the only Via Points in the route. The shaping points are missing completely. In between the via points are hundreds of route point extensions - the ghost points that keep the route in place. The route does not calculate when it is loaded, it shows the route that was planned in MRA, BUT - if it is allowed to recalculate, then it will not have any shaping points to work with. It will have only the Via Points. On the XT, change the vehicle to see what it will look like if the XT recalculates.

When MRA updates maps, I do not know whether their new version of HERE map is the same as the version on my XT. I know that I my XT has recalculated routes from MRA on loading in spite of using HERE maps. On this occasions, and when I first started using MRA, it didn't.

In the quote below, I have included just 4 of the ghost points to represent the massive list of points. (There are about 370 such points in this short 16 mile test route).

Version 1.1 on the XT screen. Not that Via and Shaping Points are all shown. Click to see a full sized image.

Version 1.2 on the XT screen. No shaping points, but the route has not been recalculated on import, the file contains all of the 'ghost points' and the route remains intact.

But here, after forcing a recalculation (change vehicle), The route loses its shape as the XT has no shaping points to work with.

I cannot get MRA to email me version 1.2 !! The email never arrives.
Have owned Zumo 550, 660 == Now have Zumo XT2, XT, 595, 590, Headache
Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

jfheath,

I am certain that when I tested this last weekend, whatever I saved from MRA transferred all points as announcing vias. I don't know what I did earlier, but I am not able to duplicate my previous results. The V1.1 file I just tried is working exactly as you explained with shaping points used for "teardrop" points, and announcing vias used for the "hand" points. Maybe I accidentally saved as a V1.0 gpx instead of 1.1?

I had assumed that my V1.2 file was working as expected because the XT followed my planned route exactly and did not announce except for the "hand" points. But when forcing a route recalculation as you suggested, it worked as you described, removing the route shaping, and doing direct routing between the "hand" points.

so i stand corrected. Saving as V1.1 seems to be doing what the (i) describes should be happening for V1.2.

sorry for the confusion.

Not at all - I did exactly the same thing when I did some more testing this afternoon - I transferred one file and thought it was the other.
I think the rpoblem is that the XT and BAsecamp use the name of the route that is within the file, not the filename itself. I also discovered that when sending a route by email, none of the v1.2 files arrived in my inbox.

I have had another similar experience. My earlier description of v1.2 wasn't exactly correct. When a v 1.2 route created on MRA is transferred to the XT, it doesn't recalculate the route. Or at least, it didn't today. It didn't when I first bought a licence for MRA. But subsequently it did recalculate. I am guessing (and it is only a guess) that there was a time lapse between my update of garmin maps and MRA's update of HERE maps, and some of my previous tests were when my map was different from MRAs.

This error makes another description wrong. It is correct that V1.2 does only include Via Points, but not the Shaping Points, but the entire route contains all of the ghost points which leep the original route in place - even without the Shaping Points. I deliberately didn't mention this, becasue if the XT was recalculating the route every time, those original ghost points would be gone.

But then, if it XT gets the chance to recalculate, it has no shaping points to work with - but that is true of any route from any source including BAsecamp.

I don't know how much of a problem this is if AutoRecalc is turned off. I have uncomfirmed observation that the XT (and the 590/595) will sometimes recalculate even when Auto Recalc the route is turned off. By that, I mean that I know that it has done it, but I haven't been able to determine exactly when it does it.

Thanks for your reply, that is really helpful. I felt sure that I was correct - but I have been sure a few times before, and it turned out that I had made an incorrect assumption, so its good to be challenged and made to double check ....... !! If I hadn't re-tested it in response to your findings, I wouldn't have come across those other issues. I need to check my 'Everything you need to know' pages, to see if I have made the same statement in there.
