And this morning, one last attempt before doing the Garmin-suggested full-factory-reset ... I plugged the cable into my powered Dell USB-C hub, rather than directly into my USB-C (with adapter!) ports on my MacBook, and the damned thing connected just fine.

Good grief, I don't know whether to laugh or cry!
