This is a test using the image of a full screen snip just to see how it appears in the post vs. what it will expand to when clicked.

Edit: When clicked, a larger version of the image is presented but not as large as the original. It appears that there is a maximum size that the forum will display following a click

This was a comment that I made as an off-hand in another thread, which was picked up by @Peobody.
From a personal point of view, if I am trying to explain something and I want to illustrate it, particularly with a single Zumo screen shot, it would be clearer if the full size image was displayed full size.
But I don't think 8Mb is the limiting factor in this case.
The screen shot below is a full size 1280x720 .png file which is 656Kb.
218587.png
-------
This one is probably better at 50% size - 640 x 360 = 207Kb
50pc.png
-------
And this one is 33% size at 422 x 238 = 106Kb
33pc.png
All are well below the 8Mb limit, but the first two get resized to about 493 x 277.
I think for the screenshot images (which I tend to use a lot) the 50Pc size is about the right size to illustrate an explanation and it will fit well within the forums text Window - on a landscape PC screen. BUT - how it would display on a handheld device is another issue. Maybe the displayed size limit is to do with making the forum readable on as many devices as possible ?
EDIT - having had this sitting half completed for a while, I've just come to finish it off.
These images are displaying much more legibly now !!
There is a few parts to image uploads!
There is a max of 8MiB which really only takes affect to files not images unless the image is smaller than 1600x1600 pixels
If an image is larger than 1600x1600 pixels then it will be resized
Then there is a seperate system that will resize that image to show it as a thumbnail if its larger than 500x500 pixels (I have just adjusted this from 400x400) this when clicked will then go to a larger size
Right click and open in new tab/window will show the full size image
If I left images to be full size then they would just take over posts and look way out of place
I can adjust the 500x500 to be larger or smaller if you prefer

I have just realised
This is defined by the system that makes the thumbnail show
If you right click and open in new window you will get the full size image

I changed the settings for this image to resize anything larger than 3200x3200
And if you right click and open in new window you get a full size image that will be better quality for zooming in

And here is the same image with the settings at 1600x1600
Again right click and open in new tab/window will give full size

You can also see at the bottom of each image it gives you the size in MiB/KiB
You can see a difference in the size and this would affect quality but also affects the storage space taken on the server
