All good points in your post. Just a comment on this one. No GPS can tell you which way you are facing with any reliable accuracy until you start moving. Sometimes it guesses correctly, but usually it requires you moving at least at walking pace for a short distance before it can compare where you were at the last satellite reading (roughly every 1.5 seconds if I recall correctly) and where you are now. Where this really shows up is when I am riding my mountain bicycle or hiking in the woods. There are times when having a compass is mandatory because the GPS can't tell you which direction to take until you try it, and sometimes the terrain presents obstacles.
