No need to feel embarrassed. I find the Garmin documentation completely useless for learning how to use the Zumos in real life. So I put together my own!

Just one point. If the route doesn't go the way that you intended, ignore it and follow the black track, the route will probably recalculate - and it may well choose the way that you are heading. It may take it a while, but eventually.

It makes the black track quite a powerful friend when the satnav start to do something stupid. Stop navigation, follow the track, find a coffee stop and regroup.

It is refreshing to have someone keen to learn and ask for help from the start. It reminds us of the very steep learning curve that is involved.
Have owned Zumo 550, 660 == Now have Zumo XT2, XT, 595, 590, Headache
Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

Indeed! Not only that but there are a lot of things for which there is no "best way". There's just the best way that works for you. The more curious you are the more you learn of your options. That leads to figuring out what works best for your riding style and your brain.

So.. @jfheath and @Peobody ..it went OK Thnx to your guidance.. 🙏👌👍..

Some hicups.. 😊😳.. When transfering the track to route.. After 94%, I had a message from XT of cannot make route 🤔😒..

I uploaded same route, different way points, and it worked.
As you said, I don't viated for petrol, I saw the magnet line, I went.. Continued for 10 min then XT lost direction on roundabouts.. Tried to rectify but no success.

I ended up with Google map on A road for 40 km to home 😒🙄😭..

Anyway, 1st successful trial.. Let us see the coming ones..

Thnx again for your support and useful hints.. Really appreciate them 👍🙏

That can happen a lot. I often find that If I ask it again it gets a bit closer to completion. Then ask again etc. If they don't complete in the first attempt, they usually complete after three or 4 attempts. Not always though.

I don't use this method very often - only really to check out what it does.

All sorts of things could be going on here. I suspect that when you stopped for petrol, the XT was turned off, and it lost the route. In that case - or if things are not doing what you expect - stop the navigation (main screen - Stop), and then reload the Tip from the Tripplanner, select go, and then select Closest Entry point.

This is a good emergency standby. The closest point on the route from where you are now, may be not quite where you think. Eg if the route is generally heading north - it could mean having to head south - simply because you can join the route in 4 miles if you head south, but if you head north it is 5 miles before you join the route. So head north for a couple of miles and then try again !

There are also issues with circular routes - because the closest point might well be 2 miles away on the road that you will take to get home.

Personally I do not use trips that have been created from Tracks. But I know that a lot of people do.

One thing that I found that was surprisingly good (although I still don't use it) - is to load a track and select Go !. You get the purple line plotted from your track and if you stray away from it, it plots a dotted straight line in the direction of the point that it thinks is closest on the route, and tells you how far away that point is. The purple track stays fixed in place - so if you zoom out far enough you can always see it.

Its like having a paper map that automatically trune pages - with the route marked with a highlighter pen, and a back seat driver quietly saying 'You need to be be heading in that direction over there'. But it gives no instructiosn at all. When I first read about it, I though it would be a complete waste of time. But it turned out to be quite refreshing.

Images of this - See "Navigating with the aid of a Track" halfway down this page app.php/ZXT-P48

I don't either. I create the route in Basecamp. I then tell Basecamp to create a track of that route. I transfer both to the XT. I import them on the XT. When I am ready to ride that route I show its track on the map and then load the route via Trip Planner. I will usually do the RUT fix at some point before the ride but that is a whole different conversation. I don't always do the RUT fix. I don't think it is worth the effort for a regional joyride where neither the destination nor the route are particularly important. Stopping then restarting the route is always an option. Worst case, I can stop the route and then tell the XT to get me home. FWIW, I don't use the Go Home function because if someone gets there hands on my XT, I don't want them to know where I live. Instead, I keep my home address as a Saved (Favourites) waypoint so will select it from that list when I need to create a route home.

Hi @Peobody and @jfheath.. Another succesful trip today but with a different set-back 🤔😕.. The XT in the middle, after I stopped for coffee, froze.. 😑😑.. I restarted it 3 times and nothing.. Open up, go to the trip.. I ride for 200 meters still the same.. I took it for 1 km, still nothing..
Then i just said let it guide me to home, it didnot want to connect to Cardo Edge. 3 times restarting and watching again you tube on how to connect XT, nothing. There is no even a bottom to link the Bluetooth.. Usually it was automatically connecting, but then nothing..

In - 2 degrees, tried to solve.. Then just used the phone to the way back.. 🤔😕..

Thnx again for everything 👍..

Best regards,

Ibrahim
