As far as I know I cannot get the update without the Navigator.
as far as I know, when I had 396 on Express and downloaded 2026.1 maps to my computer only, I think Express validated the update maps because the 396 was connected. and when using MapInstall only, those update maps were already validated so didn't need the 396 connected to computer. and for your current maps in device memory and some overflow onto the card, maybe leave those as is and don't remove them, because I am only a newbie and have no idea how Garmin treats the files. lol 8-)

That's great. It certainly does not sound like you would be considered a newbie!

So:
1) connect device to computer and download map to computer only (Basecamp) via Express. The device enables authorization of the download.
2) remove device and install SDcard in computer. Using Map Install copy the map to the card.
3) then install the card in the device and you have the map.

I will surely remember that. In fact I think will try to copy the map from my computer to a portable hard drive to test my ability with Map Install.

Thanks

Well, I could not do that. When I opened Map Install it has a "find device" button. It could not find my portable hard drive. But, when I connected the Navigator it found it + the card identified as a single item. It said the latest (maybe it said current) map was installed. I don't really want to remove the card from the Navigator to try as everything is up and working now.

what you could do is leave the sd card on your Navigator, connect the Navigator to your computer, open MapInstall program, and check to see if in MapInstall will see the sd card under Find Device, maybe it's possible to select maps on MapInstall using your mouse pointer, and have those installed on the sd card that's on the Navigator, I assume that you have used Garmin Express to download the new 2026.1 maps to your computer while the Navigator was connected to your computer, that process will validate the 2026.1 maps, and maybe when using MapInstall to put the maps from computer to sd card, they will have been validated already, don't try using Garmin Express to install 2026.1 maps onto the sd card, because I am not sure Garmin Express shows the Option to put maps onto the sd card directly, maybe it does, but I'ven never see it.

another thing that I think about Garmin Express, when it downloads maps, it does all or nothing, i mean, there is no way that I know of to select certain areas (maps for certain States) like MapInstall can do, Express will only download all of USA all at once without Options to select the States you want, as far as I know, which isn't very much 8-) and yes I'm a newbie, I'm not all that bright lol

When I had the Navigator connected to the PC via USB and started Map Install it found the Navigator with card installed as a single item - one memory. Then, when I selected it it showed that the map (city nav 2016.1) was installed two places. One place had maybe 3.5GB and the other place had maybe 2GB. Then it had an option to install the same map, but apparently all in one spot. My take on this was that the map is installed 3.5 GB on the device memory and 2 GB on the card - and Map Install was offering to install it all on the card in addition. It never indicated that there was a separate device memory and card memory. It just indicated the memory quantities, I.E. 3.5, 2.0 and 5.5. I think it also showed how much free memory I had.
I really feel like I fixed my base problem with I reinstalled Express. I'll find out when a new map comes up.

I didn't know that MapInstall manage Zumo unit internal memory and sd card memory in the Zumo all as 1 memory.
When I was using MapInstall with the sd card in the reader only with no Zumo connected, and put maps on the card I must have been lucky doing that. Thanks for doing that because I learned something about MapInstall that I never knew before 8-)

Thanks twowheelstom, updated nicely
I used Mapinstall by selecting full update and did it direct to Zumo and let it decide which memory to use. It used both hard drive and part of sd card.

I'm just wondering, but if you copy the (.xml) file from zumo internal memory and paste it into the SD card, then put that SD card into a separate card reader then into the computer, MapInstall will see on that SD card the .xml file (map license file to use the garmin maps) and then MapInstall can be used to mouse pointer select the maps on the computer screen and install them onto the SD card, because with that .xml file MapInstall sees on the SD card, MapInstall will think it's actually a legal Zumo unit. I think that's what happened to me with I had an SD card into a card reader and used MapInstall to install just the East Coast maps of Canada onto the card, then I put that SD card into my Zumo 396 and the Zumo recognized those maps on the card as license legal. i think that garmin file .xml is key to doing it this way.
