If in doubt, use a switched circuit to trigger a relay powered by the battery. AND actually shut down the XT if it will be unused for a few days.
for a switched circuit, some will connect a relay to bike's rear tail light circuit because that tail light circuit is key on/off switched, then from bike battery to relay then relay to Zumo cable

Somewhere midway through this discussion @danham posted about the Silicone Sling by Tackform as a method of securing the XT in place. Well, I received mine this morning and had one installed within 5 minutes. I am really impressed. I think he exaggerated when it said "The extra 2 seconds required to hook them up..." though. I takes me 3 seconds. :D I didn't try it with gloves on though.

Thanks again @danham.

excuse my ignorance, I'm a newbie so allowed lol, but what's a silicone sling? and where did you get it? is there a website for that item, I assume it's to secure the XT to the cradle better, will I need one of those?

could you show another picture of the sling but of the back of the cradle? will the sling wrap around the mount cable?

You disconnect the cradle at the ball clamp, slip the sling over the ball, then reassemble. The sling then stays in place ready for its four corners to be stretched around the corners of XT.

pardon my idiot question, but by removing the cradle at the ball clamp to install the sling, doesn't that mean to also remove the cradle from ball again again when wanting to take the XT off the cradle?

The sling is just an oddly shaped rubber band. You clip the XT into the cradle and then stretch the corners of the sling over the corners of the XT. To remove the XT you slip the corners of the sling off the corners of the XT and then release the XT from the cradle. The sling remains in place between the ball mount and the cradle.
