Newest Map Update is Big

The new CNNA 2022.20 maps for the Zumo 590 are over 6 GB. Last year the update was less than 4 GB. There is only a little more than 1 GB free on the 590.

I have a 16 GB SD card in the 590 with just some music, about 14 GB free. Has anyone installed the new maps yet?
Does Express just handle this? Give you an option to install some of the maps, not all? Or, put some of the maps on the SD card?

Alternatively, if I install the entire mapset on the SD card, what do you do with the previous maps that are still on the internal 590 memory?

If the actual map, rather than the update which contains more than just the map file, is over 4Gb then Express will split it in two and install both parts. The EU map has been over 4Gb for years and there are no issues doing that.

4Gb is the trigger point as the FAT32 format cannot handle files larger than 4Gb

I don’t completely understand the reply.
I am following this question/topic as well.
Does express give you an option of putting some some of the map update on the sd card and some in the internal storage?

I have always put maps, routes, waypoints on my 590’s internal storage. I regularly clean out the routes (if I am not using them) so I only keep a couple of routes in the there. The only thing I have on my sd card is music.

Yes, this didn’t answer my question. The issue is that the new NA map is bigger than the available device memory. Doesn’t matter if it gets split into two files, it still looks like there isn’t enough room.

I haven’t tried to run Express yet, to see if it offers to put some of the maps on the SD card. That was my question.

Express will put the maps where there is space ... the default option is both on the device but if both won't fit one will be put on the card if you have one.

Thanks Sussamb. That is what I needed to know. I will try the update with Express, device only.

UPDATE: I ran the map install with Express on the 590. It took about an hour (estimate was 1:29) and completed successfully. I checked the 590 after the install and the map file was less than 4 GB. I suppose that some big portion of the 6+ GB install file was data other than the map file itself.
