USB absolutely not working on replacement Zumo XT

I got my Zumo XT swapped about a year ago for a device that was overly sensitive to raindrops on the screen.
Yesterday I just got back from a 3300 mile trip to the Rockies in the US - Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado... great trip!
The device was as flakey as ever - usually rebooting at least once a day - but I'm used to that. My old unit did that too. My desire is that one day in the future a firmware fix will make it reliable.
HOWEVER - the big bummer is that I took the occasional screenshot, as well as recording tracks, and I cannot get the device to connect at all!
Multiple cables, multiple computers. MacOS Monterey (with Android File Transfer) and Windows 10.
On all three machines, there is no evidence whatsoever that a USB device has been plugged in. The Zumo knows it's connected (www.garmin.com/express) but - that's it. "System Report" in MacOS sees no USB devices connected. Windows10 usually makes a happy little "boopity boop" sound when it sees something connected to the USB port... no such sound occurs when the Zumo is plugged in. The USB cables are good - taken from external drives that are currently in service as backup devices.
I've emailed Garmin and I'm waiting to hear back. I'm fairly certain that the best they'll be able to do is swap it out again (if I'm lucky!) - resulting in 100% loss of the data I'm trying to copy down.
When it works, the XT is a slick device - but damn, after a couple years I still feel like I'm testing a beta device. I'm extremely disappointed.
