I remember at one point, there were issues with newer versions. Is this version stable or should I try to find the same version you are on?

Latest version has always worked for me, so suggest you try that first.

For what its worth. It took me a long time to get used to Basecamp, and used Mapsource instead, But now I prefer Basecamp.

I'm one of those stuck in the past and much prefer Mapsource.. the last update was 6.16.3.

Your link to Mapsource only works to update. Where can I find the download of the original Mapsource? I have a friend that wants to start using it like I do!

If you mean the MapSource link there is both a link to the patch and MapSource itself, you've clicked on the wrong one. The main download button is 57Mb which is the main program, the patch is only a few Mb
