Does USB cable disconnect turn off the XT?

The XT automatically turns on from an 'off' state when it is connected to a PC with a USB cable so, when it goes dark after disconnect, does it return to the 'off' state?

Don't have mine handy, but my best guess is no. When it just "goes dark" without asking if you want to power off, that means it is in sleep mode. At that point you have to wake it up, press Agree, then hold the button until it asks if you want to power off.

That is my thinking too but if I were the developer who created a startup on connect routine I would want to return the device to it original state on disconnect, or at the very least prompt for continue using or turn off. I can't tell you how many times I turn my XT on just to make sure that it is turned off. I hope the power button is more durable than the USB cable jack.

Back at my desk and tested two scenarios. Only one results in shutting all the way off upon USB disconnect.

Connect to your computer (Mac in my case) and let it go into file transfer mode. Disconnect. It powers off.

Connect and say no to file transfer. The regular home screen displays. Disconnect. The XT sleeps and does not shut off.

This is the scenario I was wondering about. How did you confirm that it powers off?

If it was asleep, a quick tap on the power button would wake it up and present the Agree screen. Instead, it said Garmin on a black background and booted up with the white progress bar, meaning it had been powered off.

It for sure powers off completely because you can't start it with a short press of the power button and when the Zumo XT starts, you'll notice the 'long' boot process!

I have just tested this

Plugged in to USB all powered up and removed the lead and it goes in to sleep mode as it does when the power is cut from the mount

I checked mine as well. Unplugging the usb from my computer has the XT going to sleep. Same tbing unplugging from a wall outlet charger- sleep mode.

Sorry - wasn't really clear in my answer, so once more and this time complete:

You establish a data connection(!) - this means, Zumo XT is connected to a computer and you answer the upcoming dialogue box with 'yes'' or do not press a button, the Zumo XT will go into a data connection , the screen on the Zumo XT will go dark and shows a computer with a usb-cable - and than end this data connection with pulling the usb-cable, the Zumo XT will be shut down and not forced into sleep mode! This type of connection is used to connect the Zumo XT with Garmin Express or with Garmin Basecamp...

If you connect the Zumo XT to a usb-charger via an usb-cable (or to a pc with a cable with no data lines!), the Zumo XT will likely behave like in the normal mount and will be charged - when you pull the usb-cable, the Zumo XT will go into 'sleep-mode'...
