USB wont connect - any ideas?

I spent 4 hours in chat with a tech from Garmin this morning. And really got nowhere.

Context .... Zumo XT. Have had it for at least 2 riding seasons, maybe it's been 3. Basecamp for maps. USB connection to Microsoft Surface laptop. Has worked great both in planning and while on the road. Worked great for my last ride in November of last year.

Yesterday, turned her on, charged her up and then connected to laptop to start planning this year. Laptop does not see the connection. The Zumo sees it as it goes into transfer mode. So tried my desktop workstation (which also worked last year). Nope. Tried a new Mini-b cable. Nope.

In chat we tried removing some diagnostic settings. Nothing.

Tried it on my work laptop just to see if windows would see the new storage device. Nothing.

I even downloaded the Garmin USB drivers. Nothing.

Turned off ALL of my security settings in Microsoft Defender. Nothing. Even disabled Domain and Private firewall.

So we are doing a unit swap, but I really doubt if it's the device.

Anyone have any ideas? Until then I'll be posting another post about questions using Garmin Explore .....

Thanks!

Looks like it might be the XT after all. I charged up my old Zumo 590 and my 665. Once charged both connected to my computers (all 5) without any problem. So now just waiting for the replacement to arrive and verify.

I was gonna say, sounds like the usb port came loose from the XT circuit board. Didn't someone else have this happen?

I have a 590, 396 and XT and the XT is the most unreliable to connect to Garmin Express and Basecamp. The 396 using the same lead, about 99.9% success rate. The XT recently went through a phase of not even being seen by the laptop, and then this week in first try.

I did. The jack was physically loose. Sometimes I could hold it just right and get a connection that was difficult to maintain. Surprisingly, the cable still charged the XT. Only the data connection was affected. That XT was replaced under warranty. The replacement has been connecting reliably. I definitely handle it much more gingerly than the first one.
