Elevation App

I had a chance to play with some of the Zumo's apps on a recent long trip. One that confounded me was the Elevation app. I'm not sure what to expect from it. Is it just a suggestion of what's ahead on my route? I found that I could not correlate my current elevation (indicated at the top in the blue box) with the profile shown. Intuitively, I would expect the profile and blue vertical line to intersect at my current elevation and that the profile would be indicative of the route ahead for the next 30 or so miles. Thoughts on this?

Thank you,

That was my thinking too but it never seemed to correlate to actual elevation. IIRC, the numeric elevation number has been close to what the app on my phone shows but that profile pane seems meaningless.

I trust that the elevation figure is close as Iā€™m not running anything else to verify it. Seems like a missed opportunity by Garmin either to explain it adequately or have it work as we would reasonably expect.

I've never seen a correlation while riding but I think I'm zoomed out to far to see it, like your picture shows. There is a way to see a graph of your elevation after the trip. I don't use it much but I have seen screenshots of it.

It would be very useful if it was a preview of the elevation changes on the current route for the next 30 miles. I did notice that the profile ended as a via point was reached (in my case a reminder to get fuel) and refreshed when the via point was passed. There's is something going on there, I just don't know what.

Now I know more. A quick call to Garmin Technical Support resulted in the recommendation to press on the box that opens when starting the Elevation tool. Bingo, it expands to a full screen that shows a much bigger elevation profile that is stationary while the blue vertical line moves along the mileage axis. Note that the elevation in the blue bar on top does not correlate to the graphic because I'm at home and this is a simulated route.

So it appears it really does work!

I don't see what you see that makes you think it works.
If the blue line represent your location as you move, and the profile the actual terrain elevation for the next 44 miles, then where the blue line intersects the terrain looks to be somewhere around 1000 ft yet the "Current elevation" numerical value is 261. What am I missing?
This reminds of the picture of the old hag/beautiful women optical illusion picture. You just need the right point of view.

This was a poor example. The reason that the Current Elevation is 261 feet is because I am at home and not moving. The screen shots are from a short route using the Simulated GPS mode. The screens show the simulated progress about 15 miles from the start. Had I actually been riding I think the Current Elevation value would be around 1000 feet as you noted. When I started the simulated route the blue line was fully to the left, consistent with my home elevation of 261 feet. That's my rationale, at least.

So do are you thinking that the full screen view is a more accurate representation of what is seen when the view in just in the pane to the right?

Also, you mentioned full screen when first starting the app. Did you come across a way to toggle between full screen and right pane?

Honestly, I'm not really sure what the smaller pane is showing hence me starting this thread. I think it's either the next 30 miles or it's the entire route compressed into that small space. The full screen, though, looks to be the whole route and it can be spread out with the +/- buttons and panned if fully expanded. It's the screen I'll use going forward.

To get to the full screen just touch the right pane (but not the X in the lower corner). You can then go back to the pane using the return arrow on the lower left of the full screen. Hope this helps.
