I'm going to try this type of handlebar mount instead of the U clamp type on my 1" bars

Looks nice - nicer than the U-Clamp. Never seen that one before.

I used the supplied rubber tape in the kit under the mount, to keep the mount from sliding around the bar,
and put electrical tape under the nuts to keep them from falling out before they got tightened up

That looks pretty good! I've never been a fan of the u-bolt mounts.

If you wanted a chrome verson of that to match bars and maybe bike, Tackform makes chrome mounts similar, but better built with all metal, 20mm balls that might work. You would still need a black AMPS mount for GPS but that would be behind the chrome clamp and arm. The web link shows teh phone mount but you can mix and match parts and many come in chrome finishes.

I made a to-do list for this winter for the stored kawasaki vulcan 800 cruiser motorcycle, and on the list is to install the XT cable mount and wiring, thinking of connecting to the always hot accessory leads in the headlight bucket, it would be more difficult for me to run the wire under the gas tank and the seat, the headlight is an easy on-easy off item on the bike. 8-)

I had an '03 800B and can verify- the connections in the headlight bucket are SIGNIFICANTLY easier to access.
