New route created without Start/End waypoints

I was playing around in Basecamp and had clicked the "New Route" toolbar button. The "New Route" window opened and not having seen this before I just had to give it a try. Thinking I could create and drag a Waypoint from the map, I attempted that, first selecting the Waypoint tool and then attempting to create a starting Waypoint. In doing so I inadvertently dragged the mouse while the left button was down. When I released the button I had a new route as above. Neither field in the "New Route" window was populated. I am only posting this to express my surprise that 1) this happened, and 2) that a route can be created without a Waypoint at the start or the end. Does anyone know whether this would navigate if sent to a satnav?

A route requires a Via point at start and end.
Waypoints can be Via or Shaping points in a route, but they are not essential components of a route.
John explains the differences better:

I keep waypoints to a minimum, I don't need them cluttering up Saved/Favourites. Usually a Via point is all I need.

Well, I have figured out that when the New Route tool is selected, the Insert took is active. I thought I had selected the Waypoint tool but apparently I missed because I can duplicate the new route creation by simply by repeatedly placing route points on the map using the active Insert tool. Some will be Shaping and some will be Via which we know is normal behavior when using the Insert tool or the rubber band method. It is surprisingly disconcerting to see a route without a Waypoint flag at each end. It's funny how accustomed we can become to some things.
