How do you preserve a track's shape when adding waypoints?
I've imported a track that I've converted to a route. The route is accurate but I get a warning every time I try to add a waypoint that its going to change the track's shape. How can I get around this? I don't want to change the track shape, I just want a specific POI to show up on the GPS when I am driving by it.

Since the route source was a track, I would not be surprised if any modification to the route triggers that notice. Understand that if you add a POI to the route, Basecamp is going to recalculate the route because it considers that addition a change, without regard for the fact that the change simply added a POI to an existing route. I don't consider this a bad thing. A final recalculation by Basecamp before transferring to a device is wise. If the route changes, add shaping points to correct it.

Re: How do you preserve a track's shape when adding waypoints?
In Garmin-speak, a Waypoint is only a set of coordinates. The shape of the route is changing because you are making the waypoint a part of the route. Instead, in Basecamp, leave it as a standalone point, Open it and assign a proximity distance, then transfer it to the GPS along with the route.
At least, that is how it is supposed to work. I have never managed to make stand-alone waypoints appear on my XT. I have much better luck creating a nearby via point on the route and giving it a descriptive name (Turn for ice cream). It does not show me the actual waypoint, but at least I am alerted that something interesting is nearby and I can use Where To to add it to my route if I need directions.

It is not a bad thing. Noobs (myself) struggle with this because there is many ways that many things have to be handled, so terms like route, trip, track all sound the same but are very different. This behavior is great for navigating when you don't care about the path.Peobody wrote: ↑Fri Apr 25, 2025 3:37 pm Since the route source was a track, I would not be surprised if any modification to the route triggers that notice. Yup that worked. Thanks for this, I've been trying to figure this out for a few days now!lkraus wrote: ↑Fri Apr 25, 2025 4:21 pm In Garmin-speak, a Waypoint is only a set of coordinates. Re: How do you preserve a track's shape when adding waypoints?
Good advice from @Peobody.
If you turn a track into a trio - I call it a track trip - it becomes a fixed magenta line that behaves like a normal point to point route. Except it has bo points. Track-Trips are fixed - they will not alter - except if you stray away from the magenta line, the Zumo will calculate a way to rejoin it at the closest point.
If you try to add points to a track-trip it then becomes a normal point to point route which will probably recalculate the roads to travel in between the route points.
I disagree with @Peobody on one comment - 'routes' and 'trips' seem to refer to the exactly the same thing. In fact, with the XT2 Garmin have stopped using the term 'Trip' completely and have started using 'Route' instead in exactly the same places where they previously used the word 'Trip'.
Except it is annoying that when converting a track to a trip, it doesn't create the same thing as it does when you create a trip in trip planner ! Hence my use of the term Track-trip. Garmin create the same confusion with the XT2. I thought that since they use the term 'Route' and 'Route Olanner' they might keep the word Trip' for what you get when you convert a track. No. They now convert a track to a Route on the XT2. A route without route points which behaves very differently when navigating from a route with route points.
If you want Garmin's waypoints to show up on the map on some Zumos, then turn on 'up ahead places' in the map layers section. This also turns on 3 'categories' of your choice. If you dont want any of those to display then create your own. I use searches for Xxx, Yyy and Zzz for my categories. It never finds any, so my map remains clutter free, but the waypoints show up. But setting as a POI seems to do the job too.
Odd this - I've posted that info 3 times in the last 12 hours, having had to look it up from a post that I made years ago ! I haven't noticed the need to do this on the XTs, but definitely on the 590 and 595.

Have owned Zumo 550, 660 == Now have Zumo XT2, XT, 595, 590, Headache
Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !
