2.14 Basecamp - Setting Up

Suggested Settings.

Basecamp is a piece of software that is written for use with many different types of satnav, so it has lots of different profiles available. However, the Zumo XT will recognise only 3 profiles for Trips created in Basecamp:

  • Motorcycling
  • Driving
  • Direct
  • If you create a route using any other profile, the XT will ignore it will default to using Motorcycle for its routing preferences.
On the menu bar, make sure that your route profile is set to Motorcycling. (Pic 1)

    Edit Activity Profiles

Select this option to make the changes to your motorcycle profile in Basecamp.

Pic 2 pops up with all sorts of options under the ‘Routing’ Tab.

    • Remove all of the ticks from the square check boxes.
    • Set the Route Preference to Faster Time.
    • Don’t mess with the speed settings.

    Choose your Map (menu bar)

Make sure the map that Basecamp uses is the same one that is selected in MyMaps on your Zumo XT.

    Edit->Options->Device Transfer (Pic 3)

Remove any ticks from the check boxes.

    Why ??

The main reason is that Basecamp only sends two pieces of information about your route to the XT.

  • The route preferences (Faster Time).
  • The Profile Name (Motorcycling)
  • None of the information about type of road, U turns, toll roads, ferries etc are sent to the XT.

The XT will recalculate routes in many different situations, and if it does, it will not take into account any of the BaseCamp settings. Because it isn't told what they are.

Pic 3 refers to things that will cause shaping points to be removed from your route, or cause the XT to calculate your routes when it receives them - which can take 30 seconds per route and which is unnecessary.

Do Not Change your Motorcycle Profile.

Every route that you create will use your motorcycle profile. If you change it, Basecamp will go through every route that you have ever created, and recalculate it using the modified profile.

If you want to experiment to see how the route changes if you (say) avoid toll roads - then change your current route to a Custom Profile. Play with the changes, and then change it back to use the Motorcycle profile.

Doing it this way will allow you to select the preferences and instantly see what effect they have on the route. This can help you to decide whether or not to add additional shaping points. Don't forget to change it back to Motorcycle profile afterwards.
