2.15 Create a Quick Trip in Basecamp

  Contents First Previous Next

This method works well, but has a few issues.

Pick up the Route Tool, and click at the start point of the route, and the end of your route. Let Basecamp calculate the route - shown as a Magenta Line.

Use the Insert Tool to drag the route onto the roads that you want to ride. Place points well away from junctions - eg mid point of road. Pic 1

And that is really all that is necessary to create a simple route, other than to perhaps change whether the points are Via Points or Shaping Points, and to check for accurate positioning.

There are some notes a couple of pages further on giving some advice about placing route points.

Via and Shaping Points

These behave differently in the route after it has been loaded into the XT. This section briefly describes the differences.

Pics 2 & 3 shows two versions of the same Trip once they have been loaded into the XT - Pic 2 contains no Via Points. Pic 3 has three Via Points (orange flags).

For both images, the inset shows the list of options available when pressing Go! ‘Select Next Destination’ means choose a Via Point. There are no Via Points in Pic 2 - except the start and the finish.

Any route point can be set to be either a Via Point or a Shaping Point. See how in the next Section.

There is no point in naming any of the points that you create using the Insert Tool or the Route tool, because the XT will probably change the name to add more detail.

Pic 4 and Pic 5 show two situations where having a specific name may be of use to you when riding - and provide a couple of good reasons for wanting to include some Waypoints in your Trip.

Picture 4 - Edit Route Screen

If you select Edit route in order to skip a route point, you get the option of skipping the next Via Point (Destination) or the Next Shaping point.
In this case, that is not much help - One is called the A86, one is called the A862. Both are actually points on the A86, and this screen doesn't tell you which one comes next. They are not necessarily in order - the XT always shows the Via Point first. Now - if it had kept the names that I had given in Basecamp .........

Picture 5 - The Trip Data Display

The right hand side of the displayed screen can show 4 pieces of data of your choosing - The always visible white panel at the bottom, and the optional 'Trip Data' display in the blue section. In this display, I have Distance and time to go for the next Via Points (orange flags), and Distance and Arrival Time for the end of the trip - Chequered flag.

To have Trip Data for Via Points, you have to have at least one Via Point in your route !

The 'changing name' issue for route points sent from Basecamp to the XT has been recognised as an issue and according to Garmin Support, they are working on it (Sept 2021). I reported it July in 2020, so it might be causing a few headaches.
