XT Route - Normal Behaviour when Ignoring a Shaping Point

This diagram below is used for a number of pages in this section. It shows a planned route with 7 route points: Vias at 01, 03, 06 and 07; Shaping Points at 02, 04 and 05. The start of the video is with the bike roughly at the position of the motorbike on the map.

The magenta line showns the route that has been loaded into the Zumo. The green shadow line is the route that I will be taking - so not visiting point 02, 04 and 06. The videos show what happens when I ignore the instructions to visit the route point. The behaviour is different depending on the circumstances.

So for this example I am about to enter the roundabout. The satnav wants me to take the 2nd exit in order to take me to the Shaping Point at 04. But I take the third exit to head east (clockwise, UK roundabout) - as indicated by the green hi-light.

Saved Route This route is 'Saved' (as opposed to imported). So either it has been created on the XT screen, or it has been imported to the XT and subsequently modified to behave like a Saved Route. Details on how to convert an Imported Route into a Saved Route are provided on P106.

At some point earlier in the route I pressed 'Skip' - because that seems to trigger certain behaviours.

The Video - sequence of events.
  • Start: The video starts just as I am about to enter the roundabout.

  • First Pause (0:10) I have ignored the second exit and left the roundabout at the third exit.

  • Second Pause (0:27) The video doesn't stop playing, but there is enough time to see that the route has recalculated. In this situation the Zumo does not try to take me back to the roundabout by asking for a U-Turn. Instead it spots a different way - to take the next exit left to approach Shaping Point 04 from the opposite direction. The route then doubles back to rejoin the road that I am on in order to head for Shaping Point 05. The next part of the video plays faster until it appoaches the junction.

  • Approaching the junction.(0:43) The XT is asking me to turn left. I continue ahead. As soon as I reach the magenta line which is plotting the route from 04 to 05, the colour of that section of the route changes to a brighter magenta, and the satnav is happy to forget about 04 and navigate me to 05. The brighter colour magenta indicates the section of the route that the XT is currently navigating.

  • Passing the junction(0:43 - 0:45) Note how the distance to the next Via Point (which is up ahead at 06) suddenly changes as I pass the junction. It changes from being 3.2 miles at the point where I should be turning left, to 1.3 miles when I continue ahead to the next shaping point. That is because before the junction it was expecting me to turn and travel the mile back to Shaping Point 04, and another mile back to the junction. The fact that the route ahead is a brighter coloured magenta and that the milage to the end or to the next via point is decreasing are both indications that the XT is navigating the route ahead, and not trying to get me to go back to the missed route point.
