210 15 Minute Video - Via Points and Shaping Points. Before Skip / After Skip. Commentary.

The Video The Video below has been taken while driving in a car along a pre-planned route.

The route is imported. Route points are deliberately misplaced to see how the Zumo XT handles these situations.

The video is designed to highlight a difference in behaviour that not many people know about. Hopefully this video will help solve that.

We know that Via Points must be visited. We know that shaping points can be ignored if you join the magenta line after a shaping point. We know that imported routes behave differently from Saved Routes. Yes of course we do. But it seems to depend very much on whether or not you have played your Joker. Because once the Joker has been played, all of the rules that we thought we knew will change.

How so ? Route points disappear. Via points can be ignored. The video was created from a route that had been Imported into the Zumo from Basecamp. And I am not talking about the RUT behaviour.

The entire video of about 13 minutes is not cut. The camera was mounted on a wooden block with the XT on a RAM ball 4 inches away. It was located on the seat of my car - I couldn't see it. At one point I had to stop in order to skip a Via Point. THis proved more awkward than I imagined with ahrdly any room to see what I was doing or to get the touch pen onto the right part of the screen. I had to put it on my knee - and I knocked the camer and XT out of alignment. That was the only bit that I edited out !!

It is 15 minutes and may seem to drag on - but it is worthwhile looking at what is happening on the screen - you don't often get chance to do that when out riding. I may add the original raw video and one with sections sped up. But it isn't a priority.

Watch For
  • The brightness change of the magenta line.
  • The distance to the end countdown in the trip data.
  • The disappearing shaping point
