2.22 Planning a Trip - Summary

Why create Waypoints? | A Waypoint is not simply a point on a route.
Waypoints are stored locations created and saved before being used in a Trip. Waypoints are the only points that you can use in a Trip that you can be certain will keep the name that you give them: The Zumo 595 and XT often change the names given in Basecamp. This can make it difficult to understand the Trip List, the Skip prompts, the Select Next Destination prompt and the ‘arriving at ..’ spoken and displayed message.
|
How Many Vias? | Waypoints are usually set as Via Points when placed in a
route, but they do not have to remain as Vias. They can be changed to non
alerting Shaping Points.
2 or 3 Via Points work for me - placed on the route just after a coffee break. The rest I make into Shaping Points. Via Points can be used for the data display for ETA and distance. Only the Vias are listed as options when starting a route. Shaping Points provide more flexibility when navigating. Don’t insert more Shaping Points than necessary to keep the route on the road that you want to travel. They can restrict the flexibility when you come across diversions. |
Place a Via | after a Stop - rather than at the stop itself. Use a Shaping Point if you want to mark the stop itself (or an additional Via). You can then easily restart the route after a stop;
find a way back to your route after diverting in a town; easily ignore the stop. |
Allow U-Turns |
Settings -> Navigation -> Avoidances -> U-Turns -> Allow U Turns
alert you to the fact that the magenta line is actually steering you back the
way that you came - usually due to a missed route point. ‘Closest Entry Point’ can be badly affected if U-Turns are not allowed - because it doesn’t always know which way you are facing. (Tested v6.10) |
Turn ON Re-calculation |
Settings -> Navigation -> Off Route Recalculation -> Automatic.
Consider this. If you turn it off and you go off route, the Zumo navigation system will stop talking to you.
You are on your own. It should start talking again when you rejoin the route,
but without prompts it is easy to end up following the magenta line in the wrong
direction. Explanation: If you go off route and Auto Recalc is turned off, the satnav will stop talking to you. If you rejoin the route but have missed a Via Point, you will be heading in the correct direction for you - but the wrong direction for the satnav. It will stop talking to you. You rejoin the route and are on the magenta line, but you cannot tell that the satnav is trying to take you in the opposite direction. The Via Point needs to be skipped. But first the problem needs to be recognised. And without recalculation and unable to tell you to do a U-turn, how would you know ? Naturally, you blame the SatNav. It sounds stupid and of course that will never happen to you ? OK, if you say so. |
Recalculate your Route | Always do this in Basecamp before transferring it to
your Zumo. Make sure that your profile vehicle is the correct one. I suggest
using Motorcycle, Faster Time, with no avoidances set. Ditto on the Zumo. Use
Shaping Points to dictate the route (place them sensibly to keep the number
down). The Zumo will always join up your points in tho order that you created. |
Basecamp Options | These can affect the way that your route is transferred to
the Zumo. In Edit -> Options -> Device Transfer in Basecamp, make sure that all of the tick boxes remain blank - unless you know that you want these options ticked. |
Transfer all Routes | …that you want to appear on your Zumo. Unlike previous
Zumos, the XT creates a new file for the routes that are transferred with
the current USB connection. So routes transferred previously will be lost. (This
means that temp.gpx is overwritten, rather than added to). If the route was previously imported into the Zumo, then the imported routes will still be available in the Zumo. However, the original transferred route will not be available to import again. This does not happen if routes are transferred to SD card. It may be a software issue that will be changed in later versions. At the time of writing the software is v6.30 |
