The Loaded Route

Some key checks to make

It is quite important to check whether your routing preferences that you set in Basecamp have been recognised by the Zumo XT. If not, it WILL have changed the vehicle to Motorcycle and/or the Route preferences to Faster Time.

Your route should look identical to the Basecamp route when loaded regardless of any settings, if the XT needs to calculate the route, it will use the avoidances that are set in the XT for the appropriate vehicle.

Note that once a route is loaded, what vehicle or route preferences were set before are over-ruled by what is stated in the route.

Checking and Changing the Route (Pics 1 and 2)

The map that the XT displays of your route is an important check to make sure that your route matches the one that you sent from Basecamp. Check the route list, click Map. Note that the Via Points and Shaping Points (flags, blue discs) should all be shown. Press Go!

At this point the Zumo changes its vehicle type to ‘Motorcycle’ that it should have obtained from the route from Basecamp. It uses all of the other navigation criteria that are set in the Zumo XT for Motorcycle.

The only other preference that is sent from Basecamp to Zumo in the Trip is the Route Preference of Faster Time or Shorter Distance. And the Zumo uses whatever was specified in the route - not what was set in the XT before loading the route.

It makes sense to have no other avoidances set in Basecamp or in the Zumo. If you want to keep a route off the motorway, then use intermediate (shaping) points to force it onto the preferred road.

On Loading, the XT will recalculate the entire route if

  • The map in Zumo is different from the map used in Basecamp.
  • Your Basecamp settings in Edit -> Options -> Device Transfer are wrong.
  • You change the routing preferences or the vehicle type on the Zumo.

Some (or all) of the route may be recalculated if:

  • When asked for the Next Destination, you don’t select the first entry.
  • You press Skip, or Edit Route
  • You change the vehicle type or routing preferences after the route is loaded.
  • You stray from the magenta line the section to the next route point is recalculated - if Auto-recalculate is allowed.
  • Traffic or road closures are enabled.

* Note that however the route is calculated, it will always pass through every Shaping Point and Via Point.

Suggestions

  • In Basecamp turn off all avoidances.
  • In the Zumo - make sure that you allow U-Turns
  • Always use the Motorcycle profile with Faster Time set
  • Modify your route with Shaping Points to keep the route on the correct roads (try to minimise the number)
  • Use similar settings in the Zumo (Faster time, No avoidances, No Traffic, Allow toll roads)
  • If you use the XT in-car and on-bike, consider making the settings identical. It saves a lot of head scratching
  • In Basecamp clear all the of tick boxes in Edit -> Options -> Device Transfer
  • Always plot the start of your route a mile or two up the road from where you intend to set off. And…
  • … always select the start point in the list when asked to select Next Destination. (Until you know what this does !)

Note - that when you stop your route, the Zumo does not return the vehicle mode to what it was before. The vehicle that was specified in the route then becomes the new default for the cradle / power source that you used. Always check your vehicle !!
