How MRA v1.2 routes behave in the Zumo XT
I started with the same route as shown in Pic2 of this chapter. The only change was to the name so that I could distinguish between them on the ZXT.
Pic 5 shows the imported route. MRA includea all of the ghost points to ensure that the route that the XT draws is identical to the route that MRA sent. It therefore loads into the XT much faster - it doesn't have to calculate the route itself.
It follows the original route shown by the black track in Pic 4. No detour onto the M6 or the A591.
But note the one significant omission from this route. It does not have any Shaping Points. They have been stripped out. This is perfectly OK - the satnav route will remain intact as long as the XT is prevented from recalculating the route.
Check your settings: Settings -> Navigation -> Off-Route Recalculation -> Off
But other circumstances may cause a recalculation - eg traffic information, skipping a route point, deviating from the route. The XT does seem to prefer to take you back to where you left the route rather than calculate a new one, and it will then resume when you get close to the magenta line.
When the XT does recalculate the route
I forced the issue. Sitting at my desk, I made the route recalculate by changing the routing preference to Straight Line, then back to motorcycle.
The result is shown in Pic 6. The black track follows the line of the original route. The magenta line shows the recalculated route. With no shaping points to keep the route in place, any recalculation can use only the Via Points. And the XT will take you to those in turn using the faster roads - I've numbered the flags to make it easier to pick out the sequence. The XT is heading for the faster roads each time - in this case the A66, A1, A59 and A65 - all major trunk roads. I tested this feature out many years ago - Basecamp has an option to strip out shaping points, but keep the route intact. I tried it and it turned into a disaster.
The XT should not recalculate the route if you turn the option off, but that has not been my experience.
I would need to know a lot more about it before using this on my trip of a yeartime.
Pic 7 shows the trip as listed in the Trip Planner App on the Zumo XT. Only Via Points. Compare with Pic 3
