If it helps, this is what my (fully updated) XT has in zūmo XT\Internal Storage\.System\Map

I examined the files in Notepad++ to determine their contents.
zūmo XT\Internal Storage\Map is totally empty.
There are no .unl files anywhere on my XT or in the various Garmin directories on my PC. Results of a Google search says these are "Backup files created by MapSource, a program used to manage maps for Garmin navigational devices; contains unlock codes for maps; used as a backup copy so that the codes can be restored back to the Garmin device.May 5, 2010"
All the references I'm finding only mention their use with Mapsource, so I'm not sure they are still necessary unless perhaps you use that program.

Re: Duplicate maps on my XT
I assumed .unl = unlock codes but we all know about the work ass-u-me. Regardless, I have them in multiple places on my XT as well as will the map files on the PC for BaseCamp.
lkraus, thanks for you directory listing. I am on a trip now, typing this while at a hotel. I look forward to comparing your list to mine when I get home.

Re: Duplicate maps on my XT
Great thread resurrection…..
On my recently acquired XT I’d updated to the 2023.1 map set; in doing so, I hadn’t downloaded them to my PC (running W11). This weekend was the time I chose to do that.
When doing so, I encountered setback, after setback; it was a trying experience d caused me to revert to a couple of help guides on the Garmin website just to confirm I wasn’t making a dogs dinner of things. Garmin webhelp suggested I had administrator rights (naturally) and to ensure BC & GE wee up-to-date, and when things didn’t work as expected to delete/reinstall the mapset. Nothing seems to be working and I had duplicates showing up on the XT and two apparent map sets showing up on BaseCamp.
I took series of screenshots for my own sanity, throughout the process, with the intention of contacting Garmin for further advice.
Strangely - if that’s the right word - when I ran JaVaWa the program could only see the one 2023.1 mapset version; it did find 2020 & 2021 map sets, but I don’t think they were part of this hiccup. (I’m not sure about others but the projection adjustment is always necessary, I find?)
Fast forward a couple of hours, and it appeared my PC had decided to undertake an update to W11 unbeknown to me at the time.
After the PC settled down, I decided I’d give it one last shot at transferring the 2023.1 mapset to my PC before looking up Garmin’s help desk email. Success, the whole show completed seamlessly. Imagine my relief.
I am fairly sure the cause was due to the Windows update going on in the background whilst overlapping my efforts to work on transferring mapset files from XT to PC - it is certainly something I recognise from my earlier efforts with a 660 & MapSource days, long, long ago.
I think this may answer some of the earlier queries of the original poster in this thread, and also the various thoughts of subsequent posters, too.

Re: Duplicate maps on my XT
The two concerns that prompted this post were that Basecamp was showing duplicate CN NA NT maps on the XT and that GE was functioning fine even though its map details for the XT showed no active CN NA NT map. The GE map details issue is resolved although I don't remember how. Regarding the two CN NA NT 2023.2 maps shown on the XT in Basecamp, am I correct that this is due to the size of the map now requires two files on the XT which Basecamp sees as two maps?

Yes to the 2 maps in BaseCamp. Note if you use Express to install the map to your computer it is only one map. The reason there are 2 on your device is as you stated as one map is over the FAT32 limit of 4Gb
