How do I best clear routes available for import in temp.gpx?

Post by Peobody »

I am getting my XT ready for a new trip. I am removing all existing routes and then putting my trip routes and corresponding tracks on the SD card for daily import as needed. The current import function now shows the routes that exist in temp.gpx. Is there a way to clean it out from with the XT? If not, can I just delete the temp.gpx file or must I leave an empty temp.gpx file in place?

As soon as you transfer new routes with a new Usb connection, the temp.gpx file gets overwritten in the XT.

That is worth remembering if you transfer all of your routes, disconnect and then realise that you forgot one. Transferring that last one wipes out temp.gpx and all of the other routes !

But yes, you can delete temp.gpx. Its always a good idea to restart the XT from a proper shut down. You may want to get rid of any gpx files that you have placed on there or on the SD card.

Keep Current.gpx, currenttracklog.gpx and position.gpx.

If you want to wipe out favourites, history, routes and tracks, do those on the XT first. Then connect the XT AND delete current.gpx and temp.gpx. Then restart the XT, then power it off (long press the power button until the screen prompts you to turn off), then restart the XT.
An empty current.gpx will have been created and all your favourites, history, routes and tracks will have gone.

Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

Thank you for the response.

I had already deleted all unneeded .gpx files from \GPX in internal storage and on the SD card. I had also deleted all favorites except for Home and my brothers house (the ultimate destination for the trip). I just wasn't sure whether deleting temp.gpx would cause any problems.

I was very surprised that until the XT was rebooted it continued to show routes available for import from the SD card after they had been deleted.

All looks good now. The trip is made up of 6 routes and 6 tracks and those are what show available for import (individual .gpx files on the SD card).

The way I learnt with things like this is to move the file to your computer and see what happens!

Doing this I learnt that the zumo re creates this file when it restarts

It's better to ask before getting into trouble than need to seek help after getting into trouble.

Maybe I'm just ignorant but I've always wondered why people find it necessary to do this. What I mean is:

I go on my XT and delete all the routes, tracks and waypoints/POI that I don't want. What's the big deal? If items are stored on the SD card then connecting to Base Camp and deleting them from user memory (highlight then press DELETE) gets rid of them. Why the need to actually access any files from a computer?

@Stu knows this better than me, but the answer ma be historic, and may be related to the way data is transferred from Basecamp. The Zumos contain a contents.gpx file which contains the routes, tracks, waypoints and POIs that have been transferred and imported. There is also a copy maintained somewhere in the system folders. When you delete routes, the start up procedure will replace them from its copy.

But I have not noticed this happening when gpx files are placed in memory or on the card - by creating gpx files and dropping them into the appropriate location; by sharing with BT; by emailing or sharing via the drive app.

Other issues do exist with this method, like favourites not being found by the XT - but this issue is easily fixed.

It does seem that your method may have certain other advantages @rbentnail - like bypassing a number of the transfer issues - overwriting the temp.gpx; processing / altering the data on transfer / changing route point names - and a few other snippets that I am still investigating.

I have had issues in where by you delete the imports on the zumo to change a route change the route re load it to the zumo to then have the option of importing the same route twice! the old one and the modified version

for some reason the zumo keeps routes in the temp.gpx even after you delete them off the zumo so if you want to delete all routes you also have to remove the temp.gpx

This is when not using a sdcard

I guess I inadvertently bypass at least some problems by using the SD card a lot. I NEVER transfer routes or tracks to internal memory. I haven't seen any of the issues you guys describe.
