I have a garmin XT and a friend has the newer XT2, I have been using basecamp to create GPX routes for my XT but I know Garmin no longer supports basecamp, the XT2 says to use Garmin Tread for creating routes, so I thought I would try that for my XT, but Tread only recognizes the XT2 not the XT? So what software are we suppose to use to create GPX routes and tracks?
Also Tread only appears to run on mobile phones and tablets, these all have screens that are far too small for me to do my route planning, so is there any software that you all can recommend that will run on a PC (Big screen) and that is compatible with the XT and preferably the XT2.
I must admit I am very dissapointed by Garmin's apparent lack of support for their GPS's, I have had garmin devices for 20+ years and used basecmp which is very buggy and un-user friendly, but does work. Garmin appear to be dropping basecamp and not offering support for any user that is using a GPS model prior to the XT2!!

what software to use to create GPX files
Re: what software to use to create GPX files
Many thanks for the info, but I am amazed by your statement that you never found it buggy, I will move a single waypoint and it changes the entire route, I will add way points and remove waypoints and it makes a complete mess of the route, I convert to a route and the system hangs!! I always get it to work eventually but it usually needs some caressing and persuasion!!

re: what software- Base Camp! Hands down to easiest for me. Everything else made me jump through hoops to convert and transfer.

I am a fan of BaseCamp as well. It is not intuitive to use and certainly has it share frustrations but it gets the job done. I spent lots of time with tutorials and creating test routes before I ever tried to become productive with it.

Re: what software to use to create GPX files
I don't have an XT2, but my understanding is that the XT2 works just fine with Basecamp, it is just not supported. So if you have a problem, don't call Garmin. Garmin stopped Basecamp development back in 2017 and they are trying to move their users away from it. Unfortunately they have not provided a better alternative, and we are stubborn.
Posts in the XT2 portion of this forum, and other forums, indicate that Basecamp does recognize the XT2 when it is plugged in, and can transfer gpx files to internal memory. You also have the option of exporting a gpx from Basecamp and sending it to a phone via email, where it can be shared to the Tread app and transferred to the XT2

Re: what software to use to create GPX files
I've used Basecamp to create/export GPX routes for loading/importing to my Harley boombox nav system.
They have loaded and routed ok, so far.
