Customising the warning screen

Post by pcdabbler »

Hi guys, new XT owner here. Has anyone tried editing the warning screen on the XT, to include a personal message, is the file structure the same as the 660 ?

Thanks,
Alan.

Don't know but on ADVrider there has been some discussion of changing Line with same way as 590 and I seem to recal a similar discussion when the 590 came out doing the same change as they did on the 660.

Ok, the procedure detailed previously for the 660 and 590 DOES work and the software seems to be in the same format. I've just sucessfully altered the warning screen to include the motorcycle the GPS is usually used on, and a contact phone number if it's found. This procedure has been copied from another site. Obviously use this at your own risk, bear in mind if you screw it up it might make your unit unbootable !

To replace the warning message
1. Connect your Zumo 590/595/660 to your computer
2. Open the folder Text
3. Find, according to your language settings, the correct language file
For UK English, it's en_GB.glx
For Dutch, it's nl_NL.glx
4. Backup the language file, in case something goes wrong
5. Copy the language file to your computer (it's read only when it's on the GPS device)
6. Open and edit the language file in an advanced text editor like Notepad.
7. Find the <entry handle="WARNING_TEXT>" tag
8. Change the text between the next<visual>...</visual> tags into whatever personalized text you prefer, for instance your name, address and phone number (so if found the device can be returned to you)
Do not use any special characters or any HTML tags, it could prevent your GPS device from booting normally!
9. Save the language file
10. Copy the modified language file back to the Text folder on the GPS device, overwriting the previous (original) version
11. Disconnect the GPS device and power it on

Customising The Warning Screen

I was thinking about deleting my screen completely.

It sounds like it has to come up with some message, however.

It's nice to have the contact to you there for case of lost or stolen.

I haven't been able to figure this out. I can not find a file that starts with "en" (English) that contains the entire text displayed in the warning screen. The file en_GB.gbx contains about half of it but I have not been able to identify the American English file. In en_GB.gbx I couldn't identify where the word "Warning" at the top or the "Agree" button come from. Perhaps they don't appear in the UK version. Regardless, I am curious whether it is just the center text that can be changed.

The words 'Do not attempt' can be found in the 'En_GB.glx' file. It looks very much like XML format.

In another forum I have read that the file (possibly) gets overwritten with a firmware update.

Thanks @FrankB . I was searching for the "WARNING_TEXT" tag instead of "WARNING_NOTICE".

It appears that both the American English and British English language options use the en_GB.glx file.

I'll bet you are right based on its date/time stamp of 21 Sept, 2022. That is more recent than the purchase date. There are newer .glx files though so it appears that they indeed can be replaced. It is doubtful that a firmware update would replace just the modified ones so, although I like the idea of it displaying contact information, I now wonder if it is worth the effort considering it may change.

@Peobody
You're welcome

Btw: The text appears twice, as you can see in the screenshot.
