Connecting the Zumo to a Mac is still a royal pain

I don't own a Mac or any other Apple product (and i intend to stay that way).

Can you not do the following?
Export or "backup" your tracks to SD within the XT and then remove the SD from the XT and insert into a card reader (or internal card reader) to copy over the track files directly?

A Zumo will read from the SD card, but I don't know of any circumstance when it will write a file to it. It might format a blank card, but obviously that isn't what's wanted here.

If you "export" or "share" a track within Zumo (XT, don't know about XT2) it'll ask you if you want to save it to (an installed) SD card. I've done it myself and know it works.

Wouldn't that be wonderful? I doubt it can do that. That being said: I've got a spare MicroSD card here on my desk. I'll pop it into the Zumo and see what kind of options might appear that are otherwise not listed.

I stand corrected.
In Trip Planner, select the route, tap the wrench icon, tap share, choose memory card as the destination. The trip is then available as MemoryCard\Garmin\GPX\shared_routes.gpx. Seems to be a one route at a time operation, as the gpx is overwritten with each route.

Kindergarten teacher told Mom I was not good at sharing. Guess I've not gotten any better as I've never before hit the Share button on a Zumo.

That page really does not apply, it is for a different device, the Echomap chartplotter.
It says:
Copying to a Memory Card

• Insert a memory card into the card slot.

• Select User Data > Manage Data > Data Transfer > Save to Card.

• If necessary, select the memory card to copy data to.

• Select an option:
  • To create a new file, select Add New File, and enter a name. The file name is saved with an .adm extension.
  • To add the information to an existing file, select the file from the list.
  
  
  The XT has no menus that mention User Data, or Data Transfer. There is only one memory card slot. "Share" is the only way I see to write data to the memory card and that method does not let you specify a name for the file. The shared files are all named shared_{datatype}.gpx. You cannot add data to a shared file, it is overwritten every time you share data of the same type.
