I am venting about a dead XT, again.

I do have a question though Peobody, when you ran your XT power cable hookup to bike power, did you connect to 'an always-on hot lead or directly to the bike battery terminals?' -or- did you connect to a 'switched key on lead that XT only gets bike power when key-on'? I'm just wondering.

I have always run my GPS units powered on from the battery, not switched. It's a matter of personal preference, but just wanted you to know that there is no real downside to doing it either way. I prefer not to have it shut off at a gas stop and don't leave it on the bike anyway at a longer stop, such as lunch or overnight.

I don't see any reason to. My dead XT instances have occurred when the XT was removed from the cradle and allowed to go to sleep for less than on hour during a stop. It just wouldn't wake up when I was ready to resume the ride.

Key off, then remove. This is my normal procedure when I stop during a ride. I've probably done it a hundred times without a problem.

I am thinking the XT has a sleep/stand-by/suspend cycle when allowing the device to time-out, which may continue to use device battery power to continue routes and stuff running in device internal memory, which means the device is not fully off. and since you turn bike key-off, the XT will immediately go into this suspend cycle on device battery power. What if you changed the procedure to this- turn bike key-off, but before the XT time-out screen ends, press the XT power button to turn the XT off manually, I mean shut the XT down with the power button before the time-out expires. Maybe the problem is allowing the XT to time-out and goes into suspend mode. Maybe try shutting down the XT manually before suspend mode is initiated. I wonder if that would help.

Normally, the XT comes out of suspend mode as soon as it has power or the power button is pushed, ready to resume navigating. As said, this had worked as expected the vast majority of the time. Frustratingly, there are no similarities that I can identify with the two problem instances. Turning the XT off will stop the route, requiring that it be loaded when ready to continue the ride.

having the XT cradle changed to be unswitched power will solve that issue. Then when done for the day just remove the XT from cradle and power button it off.

I don't/won't leave the XT in the cradle when I am away from the bike. Theft is a concern but I often bring it in to whatever facility I have stopped at, maybe looking to see how close the route goes to a place learned about during the ride, or maybe to review the remainder of the route. Eventually I will put it down and it will go to sleep before I return to the bike.

Bottom line, it is designed to resume on wake. It's rare that it doesn't, but frustrating as well.
