Just be aware that installing the map from your PC to your Zumo doesn't install all the other files that Express does when it does a so called 'map' update. Better if you can update the device using Express

I was not aware of that! What files are not installed?

I followed Garmins instructions for deleting Express from the Windows registry. However the Express shortcut was still there. I started it and again it prompted me to upgrade. This time it successfully upgraded to 7.16.3.0. I am going to try a Map upgrade with this version.

Major file that you lose by sending a map from your PC is the junction view etc file, plus some smaller files that you probably won't realise haven't been updated

by using Garmin Express with zumo connected to the computer to do a Map Update, is it possible to only install selected East Coast Canada maps to the zumo? or do you need MapInstall to do that, I don't want to install all of North America maps to the zumo

No, as far as I'm aware if there is space the full map is installed but that really shouldn't be an issue. If you really want a smaller section you could try adding additional files to fill up the memory so Express is forced to offer a smaller region, but note it will only be from a select few, you cannot dictate a specific area

Garmin Express gives 3 Options for Map Updates:
1 - Device and Computer
2 - Device Only
3 - Computer Only

Option 3 is what I want, if the 2024.20 maps already exist on the computer, Express will just install an unlock file on the attached zuno for these 2024.20 maps. then use MapInstall to install selected map sets of choice from computer to the zumo. Doing this should install the Garmin Unlock code files to the zumo for the selected 2024.20 maps. Why install all of 5 GB North America maps on the zumo when you can just select the maps areas you want?

Because it is easy, and XT has the space to handle it. FWIW, on my XT, CN NA NT 2024.20 is listed in two parts, "All US" and "Canada and Mexico". I unticked "Canada and Mexico" knowing that I will never ride in Mexico and unlikely to ride in Canada. That said, I am intrigued by the concept of installing selective map regions.

isn't that what you just did to your XT? you deselected Mexico and Canada and by doing that you installed selective map region (US only)? yet you are intrigued by the concept of map selection that you already did yourself?

since I see no place on this entire Zumo Forum for any questions and answers on using Garmin;s MapInstall program, I am starting to believe that either #1 no one knows MapInstall even exists, or #2 no one understands what it's for, or #3 no one knows how to use it. I am inclined to believe now that all 3 are true.

I know exactly what it's for but it's an old program that should really only be used on older devices. Express installs more than just the map on more modern devices, if you use MapInstall instead then you will lose things like Junction View.
