XT cradle mount question

Post by twowheelstom »

This is a question for those who have the XT.
Has anyone ever experienced your XT popping out suddenly out of its cradle mount on your bike?
I'm asking because I am concerned about my XT cradle mount holding latch setup.

When I first got mine it popped out once or twice right after I inserted it. It stayed in the mount, but was not latched properly and would have fallen all the way off the bike while riding. This was definitely due to my not being familiar with the XT latching system and not a flaw in the mount. But it prompted me (per the other thread on this) to buy the rubber sling that holds it in no matter what.

Mine does not have a reassuring click when being mounting. Because of that, I have always pulled on it to make sure it had clipped in place. It has never come loose. I recently added the sling just for peace of mind.

The mount needs a few uses before it give a staisfying click.

No click for me after over 20,000 miles of riding and easily over 100 mounts.

I have not ridden with it yet but I have tested functionality of the XT with the sling in place. I feel really good about it. I don't expect years of use out of one, anticipating deterioration due to UV rays, but you get three so I have the second in the trunk as a spare and the third on the phone holder on my other bike.

if i hear a click then the XT is secure in the mount? I might trust a click if others can also confirm a click means the XT is secure

IMO, you don't need a click. You press it into place then you try to pull it loose. If it doesn't come loose then you should feel good about it being secure. A sling, lock, or tether is just added security. BTW, I have had both the old and new style cradles. Neither have clicked. One like is heard in that video would be nice but no such joy for me.

@twowheelstom , didn't you express concern about inadvertently hitting the release lever? If that is a concern, then click or no click, you likely will be more comfortable with secondary security.

my ears most definitely hear a click in that video. so yours doesn't have a click like that? maybe the click one in the video is Garmin's new updated mount
