Finding route location

Post by Oop North John »

In my Basecamp in the "My collection" folder I can see routes showing, but am struggling to find the sub folder / file they're located in. When I "open" the route I can see lots of information, but nothing on the folder location. Is there a way to find where the route etc when looking at in the "my collection" ?

I think what you want is in the Reference tab of the route details (double-click on a route name in the My Collection pane).

All of your Basecamp data in "My Collection" (routes, tracks, points, etc.) are part of a single database file. They are not stored on disk as individual files and folders that you can see with a file manager.

You can have multiple data bases if you wish. Mine is called "Primary", but I no longer have any others. You can find the disk location of the database at Edit>Options>General by clicking the small pencil icon.

Double click on the route or on the waypoint/track that you want to locate.

In the popup Route properties dialog box, there are some tabs at the top. Properties, Route Directions, Route Options, Graph, Notes, References

Click on References. It shows you which lists that particular item appears.

An an item (eg a route) may appear in more than one list if you have dragged it from one list to another. Or if you have copied it. That is because the lists don't contain the actual item. The item is stored in a (fully normalised) database where data items are not duplicated un-necessarily. The lists show a pointer the data item, rather than the data itself.

The reference tab shows all of the pointers to the data.
To add a bit more detail, jfheath wrote:
You may have noticed that if you use the same Waypoint in a number of routes, and then for one route you think - I'll call that something else. It changes the name of that Waypoint in all of the other routes and lists in which you have used it. That is because editing a waypoint or route or track will alter the original data. And all of the pointers to it point to the same place.

When you delete items in a list - you get a message saying that it is going to be deleted from all lists. That is because 'delete' deletes the data entry in the database.

if you don't want to delete the data entry in the database, then you have to use the 'Remove' option.

If you want to copy something but give it a different name from the original, then you can duplicate it. This created a completely different entry in the database - that looks exactly the same and creates a new pointer to it. You can edit that without it affecting the other - but it must have a different name.

Draggin an item from one list to another - doesn't move the item - it creates another pointer to it and puts that in the new location. The item remains in the original list - if you want to get rid of it from there, you remove it
.
All of the above might explain why the Reference tab might be useful. Items that you think that you have moved, also remain in the location that you think that you moved them from. The attached screenshot shows the preferences for a waypoint rather than a route. It also shows in which routes the same waypoint has been used.

Thanks for all the pointers.

I'd been looking in the references tab and hadn't seen anything on the ones I looked at, but have now found some routes that do have data there, and it shows the correct sub-folder.

I'm now thinking that if I delete a folder, it then just dumps any un-deleted data into a generic / unorganised area so it's still in the "my collection"?

From the Basecamp Owners Manual:

Removing Lists and List Folders
When you remove a list or a list folder, you can delete items included in the removed lists, or keep those items in My Collection.

Select a list or list folder.
Select an option:
To remove the list or list folder and keep all the list items in My Collection, select Edit > Remove > Remove.

To remove the list or list folder and delete all items that appear only in the deleted lists, select Edit > Remove and Delete Unique Content > Delete.

If you remove the list or list folder, but not the unique contents, the unique contents become Unlisted Data. They will not have references.

It's put in an 'Unlisted data' list

And now I realise that this doesn't show in the "my collection", which seems confusing to me.

Very strange. The Unlisted Data folder is always the bottom folder of the library (ignoring alphabetical order) with a gray folder icon. I cannot move, delete, or rename it so I don't know how it could go missing.

You might try creating a new database and then exporting the current data to the new collection.

What I meant to say that when I look at the "My collection" data unique to the "unlisted folder" doesn't show in the "my collection", which surprised me.

Cleaned up the unlisted folder so it now only has tracks in it, and now know to watch what I do when I delete a folder.
