Going To New Zealand, taking my XT

Post by INBOC »

Hi
I am going to New Zealand and want to use my Mk1 XT there, currently I happy to plan all trips using a windows laptop and base camp before transferring to XT when doing trips in the UK and Europe normally.

Basecamp on the laptop has City Navigator NTU 2025.1 and Global Map

XT in my maps area has :-
TopoActive PS Europe West
TopoActive PS Europe East
TopoActive PS Europe Central
CN Europe NTU 2025.10 All South
CN Europe NTU 2025.10 All North
Europe DEM
CN Europe NTU 2025.10 Foursquare
CN Europe NTU 2025.10 Parkopedia

1. Can I use my XT in New Zealand without any issues ?
2. If the answer to 1 is yes how to I go about changing Basecamp on my laptop and changing the maps on my XT ?
3. When I get back to the UK how do I return the laptop and the XT to their current settings ?

Many thanks in advance for anyone’s time and help in this matter, it is much appreciated

The XT will operate normally, but none of your installed maps will be useful in New Zealand.

I would go to openmapchest.org to obtain an Open Streets Map of New Zealand. Instructions for installation are on the site. You can get the map for free if you download it with a torrent client, or make a donation for a direct download.

Once installed for Basecamp, it will appear in the Maps dropdown of Basecamp and you can use Maps>Install maps to put the appropriate areas of the map on your XT. Select "Customize" to select the map and "Advanced/Partial Install" to select only the New Zealand area.

On the XT, put a check mark next to the new map in Settings>Map & Vehicle>myMaps to make it active. (It will probably have an odd name.)

On your return, you can remove the map from Basecamp by uninstalling it like any other program. It's not very big (~720MB), so you might want to keep it to review your tracks. It can be deleted from the XT by erasing the file in the zūmo XT\Memory Card\Map folder.

So, randomly we got cut off the internet and it’s taken until now to have something temporary anyway that I can use. I am in the UK.

I have managed with the kind help of IKRAUS, been able to get the Oceania maps onto an sd card and appearing on the screen.
I have managed to get the maps onto BaseCamp as well , there were a few nuances in the instructions on the site that IKRAUS suggested, but even a Luddite like myself managed it.

So I created 2 waypoints on basecamp using the Oceania maps, on basecamp a route was created and all looked as expected, so pleased with that as a test.

I then transferred it to the XT , firstly into the unit and it said there was a route to import, apon confirming I wanted to import it I started to calculate route, got to 1% then stopped and I had nothing to see or run. I tried by sending it to the SDcard as well with the same result.

Im i asking for the impossible, as im sat in the UK and im trying to see my created routes of New Zealand on the XT in simulator mode ???.

As always any help and guidance much appreciated
Many thanks

I'm glad to hear you have the new maps installed, it can be an intimidating procedure the first few times you try it.

When you start a route, the Zumo always calculates a new route from your current location to the selected start of the planned route. Your Zumo is having a hard time finding a route from the UK to New Zealand, partly because you do not have maps for the area in between, partly because roads between islands are scarce. ;)

The best ways I know to set a simulated current location in New Zealand are in this post: viewtopic.php?p=15186#p15186

Hi
So currently I have not had a total success, I can plan on basecamp using the OSM I downloaded and all looks and plays as I would expect
I have downloaded onto a sd card the maps I downloaded and when you fire up the XT they look fine and once I’ve tricked it into being in New Zealand it will do a standard take me from a to b, the issues start when I try and simulate my imported routes, it does not go well, so I am going to try a fresh install of the maps again and see how it goes, I may also try a different source for the maps, I will persevere and get a result and reply back with the outcome
Many thanks

Hi Ikraus,
we have a major step forward, it is basecamp related, in March I had to use a legacy version of basecamp,so after trying everything 3 times I started by resetting everything and started with basecamp, as soon as I reinstalled the newest version of basecamp i got a step closer, I re downloaded the maps from your suggested site, put the maps on sd card and plugged the XT into basecamp and bingo the maps on the sd card are recognised by basecamp and I can route and plan with them and simulate routes on XT , but

1 When I put routes into XT main drive the waypoints go into favourites as well which I like (but all routes ok in simulation)

2 when I put the route into the sd card storage nothing in favourites ? (But all routes ok in simulation)

3 when I put the download maps for basecamp into the laptop it will plan an route okay on the laptop but after transferring them to XT it shows the route in planned trips, but as soon as I select import it says it cannot calculate even though the map set for the sd card and the map set for the laptop are from the same site ?

Many thanks for your help so far

1. Is normal for routes placed in internal memory.

2. I think waypoints placed on the SDcard must be imported before they appear in Favorites. WhereTo?>Favorites>3bar menu>Import.

3. Did you remember to set a virtual location in New Zealand? I made up several Basecamp routes using the New Zealand map from OpenMapChest.org, put some in internal memory, some on the SDcard. They all worked on the XT without problems.

The XT reverts to normal GPS mode every time you restart it, which is probably a good default, but is also a nuisance when you are simulating multiple routes at your desk.

Sometimes I miss my old TomTom. I could connect it to my PC via USB and toggle between normal use and data transfer without rebooting or disconnecting.

Hi
Thanks for tip on question 2, will try that

3
I am able to con it now as I’ve practiced it a few times , but I am currently unable to get a route to open or calculate on the xt if it’s only been created in basecamp only using the download map set for basecamp (laptop maps). If I remove the map set from basecamp (laptop maps) and then connect the XT and only use the maps on sd card to drive basecamp routings I have no issues when transferring back into XT and open and calculate all good.

I am used to planning on basecamp with my garmin maps for Northern Europe, when all done I transfer into XT with garmin maps for Northern Europe and everything opens obviously it recalculates and away we go as both map sets and navigation setting match

As this is my first go with OSM mapping I assumed (not always a good idea) that the 2 map sets I downloaded, 1 for the sd card and 1 for basecamp would match up and work as above, they appear to be named the same and have the same creation date so I am open to guidance and help or am I assuming to much?

Currently planning New Zealand days using XT plugged into Windows laptop , sd card map set driving basecamp, then putting routes into XT internal storage.

Many thanks for your time and help it is much appreciated, INBOC
