660 Car mount USB Socket

Post by NeilP »

Just a quick one, can’t see it mentioned in the manual.

What is the USB socket on the car windscreen mount for ?

It does not function the same as the internal battery compartment one.
When using it, I just get the ‘Wrong USB ‘ error message.

If I remember correctly, the lead from the Cigarette lighter plug goes into the socket on the side. Having a small USB connection on something that could move around is going to damage the plug or the socket - so they liked that to be a solid joint.

What happened with the XT with its prehistoric USB connector and a car cradle with no power source (so you had to use the usb socket) I don't know.

I cheated. I found the pic in the manual. You'll find the manuals at the top of the 660 forum.

Yes, I have the manual and the automotive power lead.

What I wanted to know was what the Micro USB socket was for.

The socket on the 660 auto mount is NOT a USB connection. It has more contacts and a different shape. The power cord from the cigarette lighter plugs in there, providing 12VDC to the mount.

Many Apologies.

I don't think I ever noticed that socket before. I had to go into the garage and dig out my 660 cradles to see what you were talking about.

For anyone else looking in - It's the standard chunky trapezoidal mini-USB socket - that seems to have gone out of fashion with modern devices - (so guess which one they used for the XT ?)

Pass. I don't know - and my 660 was replaced with a 590 years back - so I cannot find out. They didn't have a refurbished unit to send me when my 660 died, so they sent a brand new 590. That's when the headaches started !!

I notice on the motocycle harness there is one inside a sealed/plugged rubber shroud - I wonder if it is a USB power supply for another device ? The diagram in the manual labels that plugged lead as a Mini-USB connector for a Traffic Receiver. Perhaps it is that ?

(That photo looks like a 590/595 auto mount Larry - but the connector that I first thought it was is in similar position on the 660)
