I know this is not new but Really!!!!
My 14 year old Zumo 660 started up no problem tonight a little low on power, but still showed me my route, if a little slowly
My 3 month old XT barely lit the screen before retiring to bed and last years XT did not show any life at all.
all three on charge for my journey tomorrow.
all were charged fully a month ago, pretty poor I would say.
Battery Life when switched off
Re: Battery Life when switched off
Did you really(!) switch off the both XTs?
There are three 'Off' states on the Zumo XT:
1) With a short press on the On/Off button, the unit (only) goes into standby...
2) When it looses power in the motorcycle mount, it will show a dialogue box, asking if you would like the Zumo XT to stay active - after 10 seconds it goes into standby...
3) When you long press the On/Off button a dialogue box appears on the screen, asking if you really will shut down the Zumo XT! Only than it is really shut off...
My Zumo XT ist a first-batch-unit - when it's fully loaded, 'standby-mode' holds the power for about 2 - 3 weeks, in 'really-off-mode' it holds power for at least a minimum of 3 - 4 months...

Pretty sure they were fully off, but thanks for the prompt, I'll be sure to check next time, much appreciated.

Thanks Rofor, I really didn't know before about the 3 Off states, thanks for sharing this.

Re: Battery Life when switched off
A lot of battery problems with the XT are due to this somewhat clumsy method of shutting it down. Li-ion batteries do not like to sit fully discharged for long periods, so the worst outcome has been when the XT is put in standby and not used for weeks/months. The battery runs down and can be damaged, in some cases refusing to ever take a charge again.
I believe the XT has the ability to protect the battery from being run flat (most cell phones do this, for example), but the problem is that li-ion batteries self-discharge at a rate of about 1% a day. So even if the protection circuit shuts the GPS down, the battery will continue to discharge very slowly.

Re: Battery Life when switched off
What if the XT is ON and is in the motorcycle mount, then you turn the motorcycle off and either press On/Off button 1 short press to put the XT into standby/sleep mode or allow the XT to automatically shut off without manually doing anything, and then leave the XT in the motorcycle mount,
My question is, will the XT continue to draw power?
I got to thinking this question after reading from Garmin's site below.
From Garmin Web page on Current Draw of the zūmo XT Motorcycle Power Cable
https://support.garmin.com/en-CA/?faq=4 ... tab=topics
zūmo® XT GPS navigator:
When the zūmo XT is NOT connected to the motorcycle charging mount, the parasitic current draw of the Motorcycle Power Cable is 150uA @ 12V.
When the zūmo XT IS connected to the motorcycle charging mount, the current draw is Input: 10-30V, 1.5A (max) Output: 4.8-5.5V, 1.5A.

@twowheelstom - i think, it will behave like it is in standby and connected to a power source with an usb cable - it will be charged, an so there is a power drain to your motorcycle battery. At least when you've connected the mount directly(!) to the battery! This is one of the reasons, why i always(!) have connected every gps unit to a switched power circuit! Motorbike off = no drain...
For example, if you connect at home the switched on (important) Zumo XT via an usb cable to a power source and press shortly the On/Off button to take it into standby mode, the screen goes dark and you can see for a short time a message on the screen that the unit is loading...

Re: Battery Life when switched off
If I am on a trip with XT route in-progress and pull into a fuel station and then turn my motorcycle off, would'nt the switched circuit kill my active route? with XT mount on direct motorcycle battery, the route would remain active when starting up the motorcycle again?

Re: Battery Life when switched off
When the XT is a on a switched circuit, it goes into standby mode when the bike is turned off, resuming the route once power returns (eg: the bike is switched on).twowheelstom wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2024 1:45 pm If I am on a trip with XT route in-progress and pull into a fuel station and then turn my motorcycle off, would'nt the switched circuit kill my active route? with XT mount on direct motorcycle battery, the route would remain active when starting up the motorcycle again?
Edit: Mine is on a switched circuit. I am paranoid about theft of my XT so I remove it from the mount and drop it into a locked fairing compartment or trunk. Resuming the route only requires mounting the XT and starting the bike. I know there are economical locks out there but I don't want to have to mess with a lock each time I mount and remove it.

Re: Battery Life when switched off
Could someone who knows battery stuff please use this Battery Life Calculator to confirm my calculation?
I'm not sure that I am using this battery life calculator correctly.
here's the calculator
https://www.omnicalculator.com/other/battery-life
Trying to calculate a battery drain in hours for a fuel stop scenerio.
Zumo mount wired directly to bike battery
Pull into a fuel stop on a route, leave the Zumo on when fueling
Calculate how many hours to leave the Zumo on in the motorcycle mount before it drains battery.
From Garmin website: When the zūmo XT IS connected to the motorcycle charging mount, the current draw is Input: 10-30V, 1.5A (max) Output: 4.8-5.5V, 1.5A.
Battery capacity: 10Ah
Discharge safely: 10%
Device consumption: 1.5A
I get the calculator to show, Battery life: 6 hrs
Is this correct? I have 6 hrs to fill up with fuel before a 10% drain on the motorcycle battery?
