No satellite reception in new house.

I moved into a new house 9 days ago. I have just now discovered that my XT does not get satellite reception when I'm in the house. I suspect it is due to the hi-tech insulating roof sheathing that looks to have a layer of aluminum foil on its underside. I'm bummed by this so came here to vent about no longer being able to sit at my desk or in my recliner and play with the XT. I'm not feeling any better. I struggle finding some things and there are still some unpacked boxes but I know where the bourbon is so... see ya!

Mine is a 2-story house with my office downstairs. I've never gotten any satellite reception. When I need to I just switch to simulator.

Sometimes I can "see" some satellites near a window, but it takes a long time to acquire a fix and I suspect the results are not accurate.

If I cannot recognize where I am without a GPS while sitting at my desk I have bigger problems than a lack of satellite reception.

You guys have missed out on doing fun stuff like comparing a route to generated by your satnav with those by Google Maps and Basecamp, or loading a route sent from a fellow rider and having the XT calculate to the starting point to determine whether you want to create your own route for that leg. Heck, I couldn't test the 'Big picture' map trick shared by @danham from my desk because I couldn't start a route. No satellite signal from inside the house is a new limitation for me that I need to work through.

Why not just put the XT in simulator mode?

Exactly that, often use simulator mode.

I didn't know it would calculate a route when in simulator mode until I just tried it.

You can also tell your unit that you are in a different location in simulator mode. Handy if you are designing routes on another continent and you are using OSM maps or such.

I know of that feature. I got tired of researching (or being lazy and just asking) how to do it so I finally created an instructional text file.
