This area is well established and developed so I would think the maps are close enough, if not identical.

@jfheath, see the gpx file from MRA attached. My Zumo model is the XT and I stay as far from Explore as I possibly can, lol.

@tombarrington @jfheath

4306 Old Auburn Rd is a Shapingpoint, so that looks OK.
I cant load the GPX on my XT, I dont have the USA maps.

Maybe try again?

Same result. Actually, I'd be more concerned if it yielded a different outcome, lol.

Understandable concern.

What I will do, when I get home, is create an OSM map for that area. See how that works on my XT

Thanks for the GPX file.

Shows what a brain fog I have been in for the last couple of months - I missed something that really, I should have spotted.

In MRA it is not possible to create a route entirely of shaping points (Tear drop symbol). The first and the last points always have to be Via Points. Even if they were set as haping points in the first place. The same is true in BAsecamp - you can never set the first and last point of any route to not alert on arrival - ie shaping points.

Add another point to the route and that goes after the last point and the final point to be added is a hand - a Via Point. The previous last point becomes a shaping point. The default route points seems to be a shaping point - I don't know whether you can change that or not in MRA.

But always - the first and last points MUST be via points. You don't have to do anything special to achieve this. Start a route, start clicking points, the first will be a hand. As you add additional points the last one is always a hand, and all previous ones that had been nands when you placed them change to teardrop shaping points when each new end point is added.

And if they are not then certainly the Zumo will change them when the route is imported.

My guess is that you created your 35 point route and then you clicked the mouse on the map and didn't notice that a point 36 had been added. Point 35 becomes a shaping point, and point 36 becomes the new end of route Via Point. That accidental adding of a route point is easy to do on MRA - it leads to into placing the points sequentially, and many times I want to move around the map to a different location, I will end up dropping a point that I didn't meant to.

Does this seem like a feasible explanation ?

Now if you are saying that point 36 was added as a result of sending the route to the XT via the drive app..... well - that is what I am about to try to find out. But I have USA maps for my XT2, I cannot use them on the XT. We'll see what happens though.

It could be my own brain fog but I'm pretty confident this was always a 36 point route. What's odd is that when loaded to the Zumo from MRA it shows point 35 as a flag. However, when I saved it as gpx 1.1, imported it to BaseCamp, and then transferred it from there to the Zumo it shows as a shaping point.

Perhaps I can try recreating the route with the same number of points in the approximate same locations and see what happens, along the lines of @FrankB's suggestion. Maybe my method the first time contained some error.

Same story. Shows as a shaping point in the preview of route points but as a via point in the map preview and the turn-by-turn preview.

But then I had another idea. I added a new destination just a few hundred feet beyond the original one. This made it a 37 point route. Now point 36 shows as a via and point 35 (the via in the first version) is a shaping point! Is there some other point limitation in the Garmin that I might not understand?

As before, the second-to-last point (now point 36) shows as a shaping point in the preview of route points but as a via point in the map preview and the turn-by-turn preview.

That was my comment in my last post. Whatever it was when you placed it, the last point MUST be a via point. BC will make it so, so will MRA and Zumo. If you add another point after the previous end, MRA seems to change the previous last point back to what it was.
Basecamp doesn't. I set via/shaping as the very last task in BC.
