396 interesting facts

Post by twowheelstom »

Upon my researching the 396 that I don't have yet, I wanted to research the 396 power cable draw current, and found that even though both the XT and the 396 have the same output current at the black box of 5V/1.5A, the XT has a constant parasitic current draw on its power cable black box while there is no parasitic current draw on the 396 power cable black box. This means that I won't need to connect a battery tender on the 396 while the XT does need a charge to bike battery because of that constant parasitic current draw on bike battery.

from Garmin... The Garmin Zumo XT has a parasitic current draw, unlike the Zumo 396, because the newer XT model has more advanced features like a built-in Bluetooth connection, cellular connectivity (on some models), and a constantly active GPS receiver, which need to maintain a low power connection even when the device is turned off to receive updates or quickly activate when needed, resulting in a small current draw of 150uA @ 12V; while the older Zumo 396 likely lacks these features, leading to essentially no parasitic draw for 396 when powered off.
